Life-time banned Jontay Porter’s texts reveal NBA star messaging bettors from locker room
Former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter used to send texts to bettors to help them win in gambling scandal.
Jontay Porter sent texts to bettors from locker room
Former Toronto Raptors star Jontay Porter can never hope to return to the NBA. His crime was to help gamblers gain leverage while placing prop bets based off his performances. However, the details of his dealings with the bettors were unknown.
That was until police arrested a person named Shane Hennen in Las Vegas on Sunday. He was about to board a flight to Columbia, and it seems they caught him in time as he would have avoided prosecution. The New York Times reported that Hennen was not a direct recipient of Porter’s information.
Rather, he received screenshots of texts Jontay Porter sent to his co-conspirators. He placed bets worth thousands of dollars and won after the Raptors forward managed to pull himself from games just before reaching his over/under. The NY Times revealed some of the messages the basketball star sent to his bettors.
The publication added that Jontay Porter would send these texts from the locker room to the bettors. They would then place the bets as per his information and cash out with big wins. Shane Hennen benefitted from these bets and also apparently helped some of his accomplices.
Had they not arrested Hennen, the extent of these messages may not have been available. He is set to face a judge in New York soon, as investigators continue to find others who may have benefitted from this wire fraud.
Significant gambling debts forced Jontay Porter to aid bettors
Gambling can have serious ramifications on one’s life and finances. NBA legend Charles Barkley has revealed on many occasions that he lost millions. But he had lost what he earned from his time in the NBA and through endorsements.
Jontay Porter earned just $2.37 million from his time in the NBA. When he colluded with his co-conspirators, his focus was not just on earning more money. As per the NY Times, he started giving bettors information after he owed them a lot of money.
Charles Barkley’s friends helped him slow his obsession with gambling. He credits them from stopping him going broke. Maybe the 25-year-old never had anyone in his corner to tell him to stop. Else he could still have played in the NBA and earned a decent contract.
