With the Copa America well underway, fans of all sides have began taking over the streets in the USA. Defending champions Argentina got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory of Canada a few days back. Adding to the excitement was Lionel Messi‘s 37th birthday on the 24th. Fans dressed in national team colors took over Times Square with chants and celebrations.
Viral clips on social media show massive groups of support chanting and singing in a festive mood. However, the celebrations weren’t without an attempt to rile up their biggest rival Brazil. Gathering in front of Brazilian legend Pele’s soccer store in Times Square, Argentine fans sang that Diego Maradona is greater than the late Pele.
Fans have contrasting reactions to the same, with a significant number of them condemning the act. However, a few are of the opinion that no major tournament is complete without a little ‘provocation’ aimed at their biggest rivals.
Fans also sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Lionel Messi in Times Square. After turning 37 on the 24th, Messi will take to the pitch for the Albiceleste on the 25th against Chile.
Argentine legend names biggest moment and regret in illustrious career
Lionel Messi is the most decorated player in the history of the sport. The 37-year-old currently plies his trade in the MLS for David Beckham‘s Inter Miami. That being said, he too will have moments to cherish and regret in his magnificent playing career. In a recent interview, the player gave some rare insight into his regrets and personal accomplishments.

However, Messi admitted that he has a few lingering regrets of things that he failed to do in his heyday. Messi also admitted that he didn’t enjoy his playing days to the fullest in his prime.
The Argentine felt that he was too caught up in his day-to-day activities and wrapped in a bubble of playing games every three days. Aged 37, the World Cup winner is yet to think about retirement and will only do so if he feels that his body isn’t up to the level required.
