Barcelona produced a convincing display over rivals Real Valladolid with goals from Clement Lenglet, Martin Brathwaite and Lionel Messi to win 3-0. The Argentine superstar, Messi scored his 644th goal for the club since joining Barcelona in 2004, thus surpassing the Brazilian legend Pele’s record of 643 goals for his club Santos.  Pele, who played his last game for Santos in 1974 was one of the greatest players ever to grace the game.

The Argentine ace has now scored a staggering 644 goals, all wearing an FC Barcelona shirt, across 17 seasons and 749 games.

The real highlight of Barca’s win at Valladolid was the association between Messi and Pedri. At 33 and 18, they’re at different ends of their careers, but they’re on the same level. With Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho on the bench, Messi and Pedri linked wonderfully throughout the win, with the latter setting up the former’s record goal.

Ronald Koeman was left pleased by what he saw from Lionel Messi as Barcelona beat Real Valladolid on Tuesday evening, but he has no doubts about the Argentine’s happiness at the club.

“I’ve said it a lot,” Koeman stated when asked about Messi‘s performance, “I see Leo happy here.

“He’s very important for us with his creativity. You can see that when there are good players alongside him.”

However, there’s another Pele record that Lionel Messi has in his sights. The 77 goals that the Brazilian scored for his country are still a South American record. Messi has 71 for Argentina and needs just six more to equal that number.
