The age old debate featuring Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is never ending. Time and again, fans find reason to compare either player against each other, comparing metrics like goals, assists, trophies and many more. Recently, popular social media handle ESPN FC released a list of the 25 best footballers of the 21st century.
To nobody’s surprise, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo top the list, with the Argentine grabbing top spot. Even though both Messi and Ronaldo have valid claims as to who owns the GOAT title, the Argentine has assumed top spot as of late. In the last 4 years or so, Messi has claimed two Copa America titles, a FIFA World Cup and a Finalissima trophy. Ronaldo on the other hand has failed to claim an international trophy since Portugal’s triumph in the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
Messi currently plies his trade in the MLS for David Beckham‘s Inter Miami. As the player nears the end of his second season with the club, the Herons are in pole position to finish first in the regular season format.
As for Ronaldo, the forward is currently 39 and in the final years of his career. After an ‘underwhelming’ Euros where he managed to score a grand total of zero goals, Ronaldo returns to club action for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Lionel Messi blows off some steam following Copa America triumph
Lionel Messi lifted the second Copa America trophy of his career earlier this month as Argentina beat Colombia 1-0 in the final. Despite his best efforts, Messi was unable to finish the game for La Albiceleste after picking up a serious ankle injury. As Inter Miami move on to their last nine games of the season, both Messi and wife Antonela Roccuzzo were spotted spending some much needed time off on vacation.
The couple were also joined by Luis Suarez and his partner Sofia Balbi as they shared snaps of their vacation in Miami. Stunning pictures of the couple showing off their summer bodies have gone viral on social media. Fans also noticed Messi wearing a case over his right leg, on which he picked up an injury that prevented him from completing the final.
It is reported that Messi will be out for a 40-day period, following which he will return to club football. Messi has also opted not to take part in the 2024 Paris Olympics, even though injury may not have been the primary reason for his decision. Suarez will join Inter Miami in the coming days as they prepare to take on Puebla and Tigres in the Leagues Cup.
