Lionel Messi finds himself at the very top of the sport when it comes to things done on the pitch. From goals scored to assists and many more, the 5’7″ Argentine tops almost every other attacking statistic. However, one thing the World Cup winner has found difficult is to speak in English. Not being a native English speaker himself, the superstar has done well to understand as well as speak a few words in English.
It was only a few weeks ago that the player appeared in a ‘Bad Boys’ commercial as publicity for their upcoming movie. In a recent interview, Messi opened up about how he feels about the use of English and how much he understands it now.
I understand almost everything in English and little by little, I'm starting to talk. I'm trying to let go and speak it out of embarrassment.Lionel Messi told Abitare (via YouTube)
The forward has largely resorted to the use of Spanish in interviews and other official communication. Lionel Messi and co. all set to start title defense against Canada
The 2024 Copa America kicks off on the 20th of June as Argentina take on Canada in the tournament opener. The defending champions are in good form, having won both of their warm-up matches in the run-up to the competition. Captain Lionel Messi has instilled a desire to win among his teammates, which was on display in a recent video that went viral.
The clips show Messi’s teammates chanting his name as they sang of how they wanted to win the title for him. Naturally, arch-rivals Brazil pose the biggest threat to the Albiceleste as they are out for revenge following a painful defeat in the 2021 final. Argentina’s opening game will be at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Group A also features Peru and Chile, with Argentina having games on the 25th and 29th as well. While Messi may very well be past his prime, he is still a force to reckon with. Supported by a group of players who are willing to give it their all on the pitch, the player has inspired an entire generation of fans to believe.
