Lionel Messi came on as a 57th minute substitute against 14th-placed New England, in their final MLS regular season match. Both sides were then tied at 2-2, with Luis Suarez scoring a brace for Inter Miami in the first-half.
Minutes after coming on, Messi went on a goal-scoring rampage. He scored a spectacular 11-minute hat-trick, with a goal each in the 78th, 81st and 89th minute, helping his side secure a massive 6-2 win. The Argentinian superstar thus ended his second MLS season with 20 goals and 10 assists.
Moreover, the win helped Inter Miami conclude the 2024 regular MLS season with a record 74 points from 34 matches. The Herons recorded 22 wins, four losses and eight draws throughout the season. They narrowly overtook New England Revolution’s 2021 record of 73 points in a season.
