One of the best soccer players in the world, Lionel Messi has caught the basketball community’s attention. Messi is currently playing in the Major League Soccer (MLS) for soccer club, Inter Miami. Notably, his recent actions suggest that he is a huge admirer of the Golden State Warriors star man, Stephen Curry.
Messi scored a brace during Inter Miami’s recent match against Philadelphia in the MLS. Interestingly, he subtly paid tribute to Curry after scoring his second goal by mimicking his iconic ‘Night Night’ celebration. This quickly went viral among the soccer and basketball communities.
Furthermore, Messi is one of the most followed athletes in the world and his paying tribute to Curry says a lot about the respect between the two athletes. It’s important to note that, Curry also has had high praise for Messi in the past.
Moreover, both stars are in the class of their own in their respective sports. With the Warriors, Curry has won four NBA titles. He has also been named the regular-season MVP twice. On the other hand, Messi holds the record for the most Ballon d’Or awards of any soccer player with seven. He also won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2009 and the Best FIFA Men’s Player title in 2019 and 2022.
It looks like Messi has embraced American culture after living in the country for 2 years. As such, it would have been difficult to not indulge in the NBA even for the introverted Argentine star. The celebration definitely allowed him to get in the good books of the Warriors fans if he wasn’t already.

Curry does make a point as both stars are highly creative, be it on the soccer field or the basketball court. In an interview following his 2015 NBA championship win, Curry discussed his feelings about Lionel Messi: “I think we have similar games, we are creative.” Concerning this, Messi also has expressed his appreciation for Curry’s precision on the court and his contribution to the sport of basketball.
