Lionel Messi produces a masterclass as FC Barcelona lift their 31st Copa Del Rey title against Athletic Bilbao
Lionel Messi took matters into his own hand and produced a sensational display as FC Barcelona won 4-0 against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey final on Saturday night.
In just a matter of 12 minutes, Bilbao lost the whole plot as Barcelona thundered four goals past them. Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring in the 60th minute followed by Frenkie De Jong just moments later. Then it was a Messi show as he blew away Bilbao.
FC Barcelona finally get some relief after a tough season
Once again FC Barcelona look up to their talismanic in awe. Lionel Messi has now scored 30+ goals in thirteen continuous seasons. That’s an incredible achievement given the consistency that’s required.
“It’s very special to be captain of this team where I have spent my whole life and very special to be able to lift this cup,” Messi said.
This was Lionel Messi’s seventh Copa Del Rey win with FC Barcelona and it remains to be seen if it will be his last trophy with the club. Even if it is, what a fitting end.
But this win will be equally important to manager Ronald Koeman as well who took over this team when it was low on confidence. This just might be the boost they need to win the La Liga this season.
The Dutch coach showed that at last he could guide Barcelona to victory in a big game and what an emphatic victory at that.
“Despite the changes at the club and the young players, at Barca you have to always fight for trophies,” Koeman said. We have the first one and now we are going to fight to the last game in La Liga.”
This win comes at an extremely crucial juncture for the club as it’s undergoing a transition phase. Most of the older players are slowly being phased out and the mantle is now on the younger generation.
