Lionel Messi last played for Inter Miami over three months ago! The Argentine legend picked up a serious ankle injury as Argentina made their way to another Copa America trophy in July. Messi has been in recovery ever since, with pictures of him training with the squad adding to the anticipation of fans.
After weeks of receiving no updates about the 37-year-old’s potential return, Tata Martino has given crucial information regarding his return. As per the manager, Messi is no longer on a ‘minutes restriction’ and will most likely make his return against Philadelphia Union on the 15th of September. Despite Messi’s prolonged absence, Inter Miami haven’t struggled to produce results, unlike last season.
Snaps of Messi in training with Luis Suarez and co. have fans excited for the legend’s return to the pitch. Despite missing 15 games in total this season, Miami still has the best record in the League and has already booked a playoff spot.
Messi’s teammate, Suarez, who recently announced his International retirement, has been leading the attack for Miami alongside Matias Rojas this season.
Inter Miami star reveals Lionel Messi’s feelings on move to Inter Miami
After spending almost all of his senior career with FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi was ‘forced’ to sign with Paris Saint-Germain, from where he made the move to Inter Miami. Recently, 38-year-old Oscar Ustari opened up about how Messi feels at Miami and what it means being reunited with the No. 10. Messi and Ustari shared the pitch for Argentina several years back, as La Albiceleste won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
He's never forgotten this roots. It makes me happy that he hasn't changed with time and hasn't got that stubbornness. I'm happy to be here and see him (Messi) also enjoying it.Oscar Ustari via GOAL
Messi hasn’t had the best of months post-July, after struggling to attain fitness for Inter Miami. He also missed out on the International break as Argentina presented the Copa America trophy to their fans. Paulo Dybala wore the No. 10 instead of the Miami man, and did justice to it by scoring in a 3-0 win over Chile.
As things stand, Miami are seven points clear at the top of the table, despite having a game in hand over second-placed LA Galaxy. Even though Tata Martino has stated Messi’s return to the pitch, it is unclear whether the Argentine will start the game or come on from the bench.
