After 1069 appearances, 838 goals and 374 assists, it is safe to say that Lionel Messi has completed football. The 37-year-old has won almost every major trophy in the sport, ranging from domestic accolades to the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup. Days after being crowned as a Copa America champion for the second time in his career, Messi became the outright leader for the player with the most trophies in the history of the sport.
With the win against Colombia in the Copa America final, Messi overtook former teammate and Brazil international Dani Alves to be the owner of an unbelievable 45 team trophies! As the Argentine made his return to club football, Inter Miami couldn’t help but congratulate the player for his unbelievable achievement. At the half-time break between Inter Miami and Chicago Fire, Messi was treated to a grand tribute in front of the home crowd.
45 children help up each of the player’s trophies he had claimed throughout his illustrious career. Clips of the same show the crowd chanting the Argentine’s name as they honored him for his achievements throughout a 20-year long career in the top flight.
Club owner Jorge Mas handed the player a collage of trophies won while the screen board displayed snippets of every trophy lift in the veteran’s career.
A closer look at every trophy won by Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi is no stranger to winning. In fact, as the player nears the final years of his career, Messi has become the most successful player in the history of the sport. After making his first appearance for the Barcelona senior team in 2004, Messi has since claimed ten La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League crowns. He has led Barcelona to 7 Copa del Reys and Spanish Super Cup victories as well.
The Argentine has also won three editions each of the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. In 2021, Messi was ‘forced’ to make the move to Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain. Despite the unforeseen events, Messi claimed several trophies to his name while playing for the Parisiens. Messi was part of the squad that won two Ligue 1 titles and a Trophee des Champions.
As of now, Messi plays for MLS club Inter Miami. The 37-year-old led David Beckham‘s side to their first ever trophy in history – the 2023 Leagues Cup. As of now, the club are in pole position to claim the MLS regular season Supporters’ Shield. For the national team, Messi has won the FIFA World Cup, two Copa America titles and a Finalissima crown. Messi also has an Olympic gold and a FIFA World Youth Championship with Argentina.
