The New England Patriots sent shockwaves around the NFL when they fired first year head coach Jerod Mayo. Since then, they have been interviewing or lining up interviews with top candidates. One of those candidates who was scheduled for an interview is Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.
Many fans were stunned when Mayo was not given enough time to work with the squad even if the season did not work out to their expectations. Admittedly, he could have done a better job in certain situations and his handling of players was not elite.
However, one year is too short a time span for any coach to impact the team. Many questioned whether racial bias played a role in the decision to let Jerod Mayo go. Owner Robert Kraft may not have such a notion, rather he could point at the deficiencies of his former player had when managing a roster.
Because Aaron Glenn was under contract, the New England Patriots needed permission from the Detroit Lions. It seems the Detroit team gave permission. However, as per NFL Insider Tom Pelissero, the defensive coordinator had other ideas.

Glenn will interview for the other five head coaching vacancies over the next few days.
The insider added that Glenn has five more head coaching interviews lined up. To the casual fan, this might not be news as five interviews is already a lot. It adds to the strain when he has to prepare his current team for the Divisional round.
Aaron Glenn declining interview has fans pointing at Patriots firing Jerod Mayo
To all football fans, this was instead a slap in the face for Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots. Aaron Glenn declined the Patriots HC interview, which was one out of six in the league. Quite a huge decision when considering that the Patriots have two major lucrative situations going for them.
One, they have a franchise QB in place in the form of Drake Maye. With the most important position set, the team will also have a staggering $123 million in cap space. Generally, no prospective head coach will deny the chance to interview when having such an opportunity.
However, fans think Aaron Glenn felt the Patriots HC interview was not for him. The way the organization gave Jerod Mayo only one season would be worrying. On the other hand, fans believe Glenn also saw race playing a hand here. Check out examples of comments on social media below.

Jerod Mayo was one of their own and they fired him after 1 year with a rookie QB & no good skill players. Good on Glenn saying he’s not gonna play your game SpaGate

Kraft promised mayo a chance to be head coach they handed him the job before he was ready *(because you fired Belichick )* he goes one year and you fire him! ????Very Few want to coach this pathetic organization, Loserville!!!!!

It is also possible that the Lions DC is aware that either his colleague Ben Johnson or Mike Vrabel are rumored to be frontrunners. He may also not want to assist the franchise in satisfying the Rooney Rule after what happened to Mayo.
