Ben Johnson’s much-discussed return to Detroit ended in humiliation. The Detroit Lions scored half a century of points against Johnson’s Chicago Bears on Sunday (September 14).

Both teams were in the hunt for their first win of the season after succumbing to opening-day defeats. What better way to start a winning run than by defeating divisional rivals?

Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw five touchdowns, three of which went to WR1 Amon-Ra St. Brown. Goff completed 23 passes from 28 attempts for 334 passing yards for a nearly perfect 156.0 quarterback rating.

St. Brown caught nine passes for 115 yards, while stud running back Jahmyr Gibbs logged 94 yards and a touchdown. Recently extended receiver Jameson Williams caught two passes for 108 yards and scored a touchdown as well.

Meanwhile, Caleb Williams threw 19 completions of 30 attempts for 207 yards, 2 touchdowns—both to WR Rome Odunze—and one interception. Williams further added 5 rushes on the ground for 27 yards. Running back D’Andre Swift scored one touchdown on 12 rushes for 63 yards.

The Lions ran out 52-21 winners. It became the Lions’ second biggest win in this fixture in 191 meetings.

Detroit natives had not-so-savory words for Ben Johnson at full time. “F**k Ben Johnson.”

Goff took issue with the chant. He condemned the Lions’ fans’ actions.

I didn’t like that. He did a lot for us. I don’t know if he deserved that.

Ben Johnson reacted to the Bears’ blowout loss to the Lions

Goff orchestrated the first TD, releasing Gibbs for a six-yard run. The Bears responded with Williams hitting Odunze for a 28-yard score.

Gibbs’ partner in crime, David Montgomery, extended the lead with a one-yard walk-in TD.

After Jake Bates missed a 55-yard field goal, the Bears launched a prolonged attack. However, Williams found Kerby Joseph for a pick. In the following play, Goff hit his tight end Brock Wright for an 8-yard score.

St. Brown scored his second TD of the game early in the fourth quarter. The fifth-year receiver completed his haul 7:58 minutes from time, scoring a 8-yard TD on Goff’s pass to extend the Lions’ lead.

Swift pulled a score back late in the fourth, but it barely made a dent in the outcome. The win upgraded the Lions’ column to 1-1, while the Bears remain winless.

Any time you lose a game like that, man, it’s a kick in the teeth. Nothing about that feels good. Unfortunately, I’ve been through a number of these over the course of my career… These guys, they’re hurt. It stinks. They fought the entire game.

The turnovers hurt the Bears a lot. It did not help that the Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell, didn’t show mercy; hence the inflated scoreline.

Moreover, they went up against a quarterback in great form, regardless of last week’s defeat. Goff wrote his name in the history books as only the second quarterback, besides Tom Brady, to complete at least 75.0% of their passes in four straight games (25 attempts per game minimum).

Goff has to bring his A-game in the Lions’ next fixture, which takes them to Baltimore to face the Ravens. As for the Bears, they host a Dallas Cowboys team that secured its first win of 2025 by defeating the New York Giants in overtime.
