Forty seconds left until the final whistle, fourth down, and inside three yards to get a first down. Usually, head coaches and offensive coordinators tend to kick a field goal, but not Dan Campbell; he prefers to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Ford Field witnessed another Dan Campbell masterclass on fourth down on Thursday while playing against the Green Bay Packers. Instead of sending in Jake Bates to kick a field goal from more than 40 yards, the 48-year-old kept quarterback Jared Goff and running back David Montgomery on the field.

Goff handed the ball over to Montgomery, who had three touchdowns, and he bulldozed his way past the Packers’ defensive line to secure a first down.

Fans stunned on social media by Dan Campbell’s gutsy fourth-down approach while playing the Packers

After getting the first down, the Lions opted to waste time and get a better field position to kick the field goal. Goff, after the spike, took a few steps to the left before sliding down and setting up the field goal.

Lions’ kicker Bates, whom they poached from UFL, didn’t disappoint. He scored from 35 yards and won the Lions their 12th game of the season.

According to Associated Press’s stats guru Josh Dubow, the Lions are one of the few teams since 2000 to go for it on 4th down inside the opponent’s 30 with the score tied in the final minutes of regulation.

Despite the blockbuster finish from Campbell’s men, the referee missed a crucial moment during the fourth down. After taking the snap and handing the ball over to Montgomery, Goff lost his balance, and his right knee touched the ground. Technically, the ball should be dead, but the officials missed it.

Goff ended the night with 32 completions for 283 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Tim Patrick had 6 receptions for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Packers quarterback Jordan Love only completed 12 passes for 206 yards and 1 touchdown, along with 4 rushes for 23 yards on the ground. Josh Jacobs had 18 carries for 66 yards and three touchdowns.

The Lions stay at home for their next fixture, but it will be one of their toughest yet. Campbell’s team welcomes the 10-2 Buffalo Bills while the Packers travel to Seattle and play the Seahawks.
