A heated moment was caught on camera on the day Dan Campbell took over offensive play-calling duty for the Detroit Lions. The Lions’ long snapper appeared to argue with a fan wearing a Washington Commanders jersey at FedEx Field.

Hogan Hatten isn’t a name that produces much headline-worthy news. He did on Sunday when the Lions traveled to the nation’s capital to face the wounded Commanders.

The Lions made quick work of their fellow NFC team, coming away with a 44-22 victory. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs had a career day, racking up 172 overall yards and 3 total touchdowns.

However, Gibbs’s performance was overshadowed by an incident on the Lions’ dugout, involving Hatten. Video footage showed an overzealous fan being escorted away by the stewards after he tried to chase the Idaho graduate.

After the game, Hatten revealed that he hadn’t had a heated exchange—or even spoken—to the fan.

The video going around suggesting I was arguing with a Commanders fan before he rushed the field is inaccurate. I did not speak to that person at all during the game. I struck up a fun conversation with a young fan, who you can’t see sitting in the front of him in the first row, and ended up giving him a ball after the game!

Regardless of what transpired then, the Lions are 6-3 and placed at the top of the NFC North.

Will Dan Campbell continue to call games for the Lions?

It was a rare sight to see Coach Campbell sporting his play-caller glasses during the Commanders game. This was a sign that Campbell was actively calling offensive plays instead of John Morton, who is the offensive coordinator.

The Lions’ offense took off, racking up a season-best 546 yards, a huge jump from Morton’s stretch, when they barely managed just over 370 yards in each of the last three games.

When asked if he would continue to call plays in the upcoming games, Campbell reminded everyone in the room that it wasn’t his first rodeo.

Look, don’t forget [former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson] — I called whatever that was eight or nine games. I don’t remember what it was in 2021, while he helped me, but he watched, he learned, you know, saw how I wanted to run it, what I was looking for, and then it evolved from there.

Morton may have to wait a bit before calling plays again.

I just feel like it’s the right thing to do right now and I’m gonna do it.

Ben Johnson’s exit sparked worries about a potential drop in the Lions’ offense. While it hasn’t quite reached last year’s peak, it’s still strong enough to handle teams like the Ravens, Bengals, and Vikings.

The win against the Commanders set a personal milestone for Campbell. Since 2022, he has gone 41-12 in the regular season games, which is better than Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. Only Nick Sirianni has a better record (46-14), 2 NFC titles, and 1 Super Bowl victory.

The Lions face the Eagles in a high-voltage match in Philly next week. It will be their first regular-season meeting since Week 1 of the 2022 season.
