Next Gen ATP Finals

Next Generation or Next Gen ATP Finals is a men’s youth exhibition tennis competition held each year at the conclusion of the calendar year for the top players aged 21 and under. The competition has always been held in Milan, Italy. This tournament started in 2017 with the South Korean Chung Hyeon the winner of the inaugural event.

The tournament does not award points to the competitors’ ATP rankings. Although matches contribute towards the official win-loss season record, the ATP does not recognize them as official ATP Tour tournament victories. Distributed prizes totaling US $2,275,000 are added to the players’ totals.

This time around many interesting names has been included. Few players are playing in this tournament for the second time while for others this is their maiden Next Gen ATP Finals tournament. These 8 players have qualified for this tournament on the back of splendid performances in different ATP tournaments over the season.

The players who have played at this tournament before including World No.25 Holger Rune of Denmark, World No.23 Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, and World No.44 Brandon Nakashima of the USA. The new entrants include World No.45 Jack Draper of Great Britain, World No.78 Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic, World No.88 Chun-Hsin Tseng of Taiwan, World No.129 Dominic Stricker of Switzerland, and World No.124 Francesco Passaro of Italy.

Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion. However, he withdrew from the tournament earlier. We might see him in action competing against the top seeds in the ATP Finals tournament.

This tournament is meant for the “future of men’s tennis”. Only the best and most deserving young players are chosen to participate in the tournament. This tournament is seen as a perfect preparation ground for these young players for the upcoming season and the challenges that lie ahead.

This tournament has helped young Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz, and Sebastian Korda to come into the limelight, and right now they are top-ranked players on the ATP Singles Rankings. We may see some new stars that may glitter the tennis world with their outstanding abilities and amazing skills. This is the tournament that gives enough chances to the young lads to showcase their abilities.

This is also the tournament which has been used as a fine laboratory to experiment with new and advanced technologies that can be used later on to improve the sport and make it more exciting. The event for the first time used an electronic line-calling system (also known as ‘Hawk-Eye Live’) which can in the future completely replace line judges. Other futuristic technologies include players allowed to communicate with their coaches and a new scoring system amongst others.
