Playing in his 306th ODI on Sunday, veteran Indian icon Virat Kohli smashed multiple records on his way to his 52nd century in the format. The 37-year-old helped the Men in Blue triumph over South Africa in the first of the three-match ODI series at home.
India aimed to make a strong comeback, given the red-ball team had been humiliated 0-2 by the visiting Proteas side last month. Put to bat first, the Men in Blue got off to a good start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma opening the innings. The 23-year-old looked in good touch, scoring 18 runs before he was dismissed by Nandre Burger, forcing Virat Kohli to come out to bat as early as in the 4th over.
‘King’ Kohli and Rohit Sharma then went on to forge a remarkable 136-run stand, putting India in a comfortable position at the end of the 20th over. While Sharma took a conscious approach to complete his half-century, Kohli was free-flowing, scoring 135 runs off 120 balls. He started off with a first-ball boundary off Burger, before going on to complete his century off 102 deliveries in the 38th over.

It was Virat Kohli’s third ODI century at the venue, where he has now recorded over 500 runs in just five innings. He did not stop there, hitting Prenelan Subrayen for 20 runs in the 39th over, to contribute to India’s massive first-innings total of 349/8. Kohli shattered several records on his way to his 83rd international ton.
First player to hit 52 hundreds in single format
Virat Kohli became the first player to hit 52 international centuries in a single format, having already surpassed the record for the most tons in 50-over cricket back in 2023. Kohli now boasts 52 centuries in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 51 centuries in Tests. However, the 37-year-old is still far behind the Master-Blaster’s record of 100 international centuries, as he stands a distant second with only 83 tons to his name.
Most 50+ scores for India in ODIs at home
Living up to his name as ‘Chase-Master’ in white-ball cricket, Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar for the most 50+ scores for India at home in ODIs. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru icon now has 59 fifty+ scores in the format at home, ahead of Tendulkar’s 58. Rohit Sharma also strengthened his position, and is in the third spot with 37 fifty+ scores for India at home.
Most ODI hundreds by a batter against South Africa
Kohli now stands on top of the list of batters with the most ODI hundreds against South Africa in One-Day Internationals. In 30 innings against the Proteas, the former India captain has recorded six centuries, adding to his overall tally of 1,639 runs against the opposition at an average of 68.29. Kohli surpassed Sachin Tendulkar and David Warner, both of whom have five hundreds.
Most Player of the Match awards at home
Clinching his 44th career Player of the Match award in an ODI, Virat Kohli also etched his name in record books by becoming the player with the most POTM awards at home, in international cricket. He clinched his 32nd POTM award at home, going past South African all-round great Jacques Kallis and Sachin Tendulkar’s joint-record of 31 POTM awards at home.

Apart from these, Kohli extended his impressive run by breaking a number of other noteworthy records. He equaled Tendulkar’s record for most hundreds at a specific batting position in ODIs, given Kohli has 45 centuries as a no. 3 batter, while Sachin Tendulkar scored 45 centuries as an opener. Virat Kohli also became the leading run-scorer against SENA teams in ODI run-chases.
