LIV Golf Series vs PGA Tour rules differences explained: Number of rounds and payouts

LIV Golf Series vs PGA Tour rules differences explained: Number of rounds and payouts

LIV Golf Series vs PGA Tour

The recent LIV Golf series has taken the golf world by quite the storm, starting a battle with the PGA Tour. The Saudi backed series has taken on a new way of golf, and several golfers have made the switch. The way that the Tour and the Series go about their tournaments is quite different.

The first and biggest difference between the two series is the number of rounds. Fans are used to seeing four rounds of golf on the PGA, but the LIV Series has introduced a new 3 round system. This of course impacts the cuts as well. In the PGA, the over 100 golfers list gets cut midway after two rounds. In the LIV Series however, since there are only 48 golfers, all of them see the end of the game of three rounds.

Another big difference between the series is the start times. On the PGA Tour, the field starts on the same hole or on two different holes at staggered tee times to avoid overlap as much as possible. However, the LIV Series uses the shotgun method. This method ensures that all golfers start at the same time but on different tees. It reduced the amount of time a round will last, but is more helpful to smaller series like this one.

The difference in payouts seen in both the Tours is also quite significant. Since the LIV Series has the lesser number of participants, all golfers get a slice of the pie. On the other hand, golfers who do not make the cut for the PGA Tour don’t even get paid. The first round of the LIV Series at the Centurion club has a $25 million purse. Of that, $20 million will be split among the 48 golfers in the individual portion of the tournament while the remaining $5 million will be divided among the top three teams.

The LIV series has also involved a team play, which is never seen at the PGA. In LIV Golf, there are 12 captains who will draft three teammates each week. Over the three rounds, the two best stroke-play scores from the first two rounds count toward the team totals. In the final round, the top three scores from the team are counted to determine the winning team. The LIV Golf Series aims to have a fresh new take on golf.
