LIV Golf experienced a significant setback as nine of its athletes were unable to earn berths in the 2024 Royal Troon Open Championship. The most notable name among them is Sergio Garcia, who was upset over crowd management during the qualifying round. Garcia stated that delays were caused by a lack of marshals. He missed the cut by just two shots.
This news is a blow to LIV Golf, which has been working hard to gain recognition and secure championship opportunities. Earlier this year, the USGA hinted at opening a direct avenue for LIV players to earn spots at the U.S. Open. This potential pathway could significantly influence US Open odds in the coming years, as it would bring more competitive players into the mix.
Nonetheless, there will be a sizable representation of LIV Golf players in the 2024 Open Championship. Sixteen athletes are scheduled to start at Royal Troon, including well-known figures like Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith.
The nine LIV Golf players missing out on the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon are Talor Gooch, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, Paul Casey, Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Thomas Pieters, and Graeme McDowell. The Saudi-backed league has been facing similar challenges for quite some time in getting its players into major tournaments.
Field for the Open Championship so far
The 2024 Open Championship field is nearly complete as 149 players have already qualified. This includes tour pros and amateurs who earned exemptions.
Notable names include past champions Ben Curtis and Paul Lawrie. Top-ranked players like Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Jon Rahm will definitely compete. Rising stars Sahith Theegala and Cameron Young are also in the field.
However, Curtis and Lawrie will reportedly not play this year. This opens more spots to be filled through additional qualifying events. The final qualification day was July 2, with 288 golfers competing in a 36-hole event across four locations. At least four qualifying spots were available at each site, leaving nine spots yet to be determined.
Players can still earn spots through strong finishes at upcoming PGA Tour and DP World Tour events. This includes the John Deere Classic, Genesis Scottish Open, and BMW International.
