Liverpool took on AC Milan in front of a hostile San Siro crowd as Arne Slot managed his first Champions League game at Liverpool. The new boss found his side trailing 1-0 within three minutes, but did well to coach a 3-1 comeback victory on the night. Goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai saved Liverpool from suffering a second consecutive defeat this season.
Slot and co. were coming off the back of a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at home. The Reds did well to maintain composure and formation after going behind in the opening minutes. A well-worked set piece came to Liverpool‘s rescue, as Konate leapt the highest to head home from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner kick. After pulling one back, captain Van Dijk headed home from a similar position to give them the lead.
Mohamed Salah came agonizingly close on multiple occasions, with his blistering shots hitting the woodwork on several instances. It was Szoboszlai who finally sealed the deal for Slot’s side as the Hungarian guided the ball into an empty net.
Following the win, Liverpool are now third in the table, only behind Bayern Munich and Aston Villa due to goal difference.
Arne Slot delighted with special birthday gift
It appeared that Arne Slot couldn’t make a mistake since taking charge of Liverpool earlier this season. However, after Liverpool conceded their first goal under Slot, the second didn’t take too long to arrive. After the Reds managed to avoid defeat, Slot was rather excited to face the press and give his review on the match. As the Dutchman turned 46 on the 17th, he couldn’t have asked for a better birthday gift.
To celebrate it like this, with the first Champions League win is very special. It's a good memory to take on my birthday.Arne Slot told the press
Despite the 3-1 win, Slot acknowledged how his side needed set pieces to find their way back into the game. Both his center backs found the net on the night, forcing the manager to admit that they have been putting in a lot of work on the same.
Slot praised how his side did well to maintain the intensity and drive once they got back into the game. As things stand, Liverpool are fourth in the Premier League and three points behind League leaders Manchester City. The manager made no effort to hide his frustration after the loss to Nottingham Forest and stated that there was ‘something clearly wrong’ if his side lost to Forest at home.
