Liverpool continued their Champions League winning streak with a decisive 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in their fourth league stage encounter. Goals from Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo sealed a win for the Reds, who are now on top of the UCL table.
The match marked an emotional return to Anfield for ex-Liverpool player turned Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard was once anticipated to replace former Jurgen Klopp, at Anfield. However, his return was soured by a resurgent Liverpool side, who maintained their perfect start to the UCL season.
Liverpool are now on top of the table with 12 points, having won four out of their first four matches. Ahead of the match, Alonso had described the Reds as the ‘best team in Europe’. The reigning Bundesliga champions initially restricted Liverpool from moving past their strong defense.
After the hour mark, Luis Diaz opened the scoring for the home side and Cody Gakpo found the back of the net two minutes later. Liverpool did not look back from there, as Diaz struck two more goals to complete a brilliant hat-trick. The emphatic victory marked the Reds’ 14th win of the 2024-25 season.
