Liverpool were unstoppable as they picked up their third straight win in all competitions. The Reds were up against Premier League rivals West Ham United as the two sides battled it out in Round 3 of the EFL Cup. Contrary to what was expected, Arne Slot‘s men ran riot as both Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota scored braces.

It was West Ham that opened the scoring in the 21st minute, when Jarell Quansah accidentally kicked the ball into his own net. However, Diogo Jota soon headed in from close range to draw his side level. Federico Chiesa was credited with the assist in the Italian’s first Liverpool start.

Jota completed his brace early in the second half before Mohamed Salah made it 3-1 from a rebound. The Egyptian was then fouled by Edson Alvarez who was sent off for a second yellow.

Cody Gakpo added to the visitors’ misery as he scored twice in injury time against ten-man West Ham. Wataru Endo was praised for a brilliant performance in midfield as he won the most duels and made the most recoveries for Liverpool against West Ham. Following the win, manager Arne Slot was full of praise for his players.

Arne Slot has no doubt as to how good his players are

From questioning the lack of signings to the Reds performing brilliantly with the players they already had on their books, Liverpool have come out on top after the criticism they faced for the lack of activity in the transfer window.

Although Federico Chiesa picked up an acrobatic assist in his first start for the club, all five of the goals were scored by players who’ve been at the club for two or more seasons. When a reporter questioned how the club’s ‘old’ players were in great form this season, Slot laughed before expressing confidence in the squad’s quality.

I constantly told you guys how many quality players we already have. I think you all knew and that’s what we showed again that we have many quality players.

Arne Slot said

The Dutchman also stated that players that come in are more focused on contributing to the team rather than performing well individually.

As for Liverpool, the club is currently in second spot in the Premier League, just one point behind leaders City. They next face Wolves in the league before hosting Bologna in the Champions League next week
