It was magic versus misery in the Merseyside derby as local rivals Everton virtually put an end to Jurgen Klopp‘s ‘perfect’ farewell.

The Reds, for the larger part of the season, looked like the favorites to lift the Premier League title, but as destiny (Everton) had it, Klopp’s men would have to let go of their dream in the most painful of ways. A thrilling encounter at Goodison Park ended 2-0 in favor of the hosts.

It had been over 14 years since the Toffees claimed a win over their local rivals at Goodison Park. In an inspirational display, the hosts stood firm as Liverpool sent out attack after attack to get back into the game.

However, after Jarrad Branthwaite scored an early goal in the first half, Everton put everything on the line to keep their lead intact. In a strong defensive display, the hosts restricted Liverpool to just five shots on target.

Liverpool, despite enjoying the majority of possession and momentum, were forced to accept defeat when Dominic Calvert-Lewin headed home their second.

The opposition No.9 leapt over Virgil van Dijk to place an impressive header past Alisson Becker. As it stands, Liverpool are now three points adrift of Arsenal and will fall to third if Manchester City manage to win against Brighton.

Fans react to Liverpool’s title hopes going up in flames

The ‘perfect’ farewell has been spoiled! Local rivals Everton came crashing down on Liverpool, who spent 87 days at the top of the table. With Jurgen Klopp leaving at the end of the season, fans couldn’t help but sympathize with the German manager.

However, certain rival fans made use of the opportunity to add insult to injury. A fan said that Liverpool’s title hopes are now in the mud.

Many laughed at how Liverpool had the ‘easiest’ route to the title and still managed to bottle it. Others spammed memes from Jurgen Klopp‘s video announcing his departure at the end of the season. His viral quote – ‘I’m running out of energy’ symbolized every Liverpool fan after last night’s game.

More memes poured in, when fans recalled that the end of Liverpool’s season was being filmed for a documentary. Some couldn’t wait to see players’ reactions when the documentary comes out.

Clips of Trent Alexander-Arnold hiding his face underneath his jersey were shared as the moment Liverpool realised that they had let the title slip from their hands. Some were still laughing at how Liverpool still has just one Premier League title to show for in this era.
