Liverpool and Tottenham ‘keeper Ray Clemence dies aged 72. He is survived by his wife Veronica, son Stephen and daughters Sarah and Julie. Former and current players of Liverpool FC paid their tributes to him.
Part of a team that dominated Europe
He was the goalkeeper for Liverpool when it was dominating Europe from 1977-1981. Onwards from 1985 Liverpool was banned from European football for a period of 6 years and returned in 1991. From 1977-1981, Liverpool won 3 Champions League titles in a period of 5 years. It was the team to beat along with Juventus, which had Michel Platini in its side. Ray Clemence was part of the team that won the Champions League titles in the years 1977, 1978 and 1981. He left for Tottenham after the 1981 Champions League final.
He won three European cups, five league titles, two UEFA cups, one UEFA Super Cup and one League Cup with Liverpool. He was part of the England team and competed for the goalkeeping position with No.1 Peter Shilton. A left knee injury meant that he was sidelined for the most part after 1980 and Peter Shilton took his opportunity. Clemence was forced to retire after making 61 appearances while Shilton went on to make 125 appearances.
The Football Association hasn’t declared a cause of death while his family said that “After fighting for so hard, for such a long time, he’s now at peace and in no more pain”
