Liverpool sign Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies on deadline day to address defensive woes
The winter transfer window has ended on 1st February 11PM GMT. Liverpool has made the most use of the transfer dealine day signing Ozan Kabak from Schalke on a loan deal. Preston cetre-back Ben Davies has also made the move to Liverpool.
All of Liverpool’s centre-backs Van Dijk, Matip and Gomez are injured and will miss almost the entirety of the season. Jurgen Klopp has used his midfielders in defence to cover up for the missing personnel. However, with half the season still remaining Liverpool have gone ahead and signed 2 defenders to boost their squad.
Klopp had requested Liverpool to sign defenders in this window
Ben Davies, a 25-year-old left-sided center half who plays for Preston in the second-tier Championship, and Ozan Kabak, a 20-year-old Turkey international at Schalke, were identified by the English champion as stop-gap measures for the second half of the season.
Davies joined for an initial fee of only 500,000 pounds ($680,000). Preston could receive add-ons totalling up to £1.1m during the course of Davies’ time at Liverpool. Preston will also claim 20-per-cent of any profit the Reds make on selling him.
Kabak joined on loan reportedly for a fee of 1 million pounds ($1.4 million) with an option to buy. He made his first-team debut for Galatasaray at 18, and has played all but one game for Schalke this season.
Liverpool desperately needed to sign defenders in this window after Klopp confirmed Matip would be out for the rest of the season. It has been a curious season for Liverpool where all defenders have injured themselves whenever they played. Klopp now has received 2 young defenders and he will hope they remain fit for the rest of the season.
