Xherdan Shaqiri has a lot of potential suitors for him in the case that he wants to leave Liverpool since the minutes are decreasing for him. However this season has been a curveball as the absence of Diogo Jota and the dip in form of the front three made Jurgen Klopp play Shaqiri more. Xherdan Shaqiri has started the last three matches for Liverpool as Jordan Henderson pulled up injured against Burnley before. Now it is expected that Shaqiri will go back to being a substitute player now as Jordan Henderson is back from a minor injury.
The talented winger needs to be more consistent and performing better in crunch matches
Xherdan Shaqiri quickly became a fan favourite player when he scored an overhead kick against Manchester United on his debut for Liverpool in the 2018 preseason. In the first half of the 2018/19 season Shaqiri showed his class and started getting goals and assists for Liverpool and at one point of time he had 6 goals and 5 assists in less matches. Arguably his best performance for Liverpool came as a substitute when he decimated Manchester United with two deflected goals in Anfield as Liverpool defeated them 3-1. Then came the beautiful assist to Gini Wijnaldum when Barcelona came to visit them in the 2nd leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
Injuries have not been helpful for the Swiss winger and had limited his time in the 2019/20 season and his return from injury in December 2019 against Everton was marked by a good performance as he scored a goal then as Liverpool won 5-2 at Anfield. Shaqiri had gone missing since then and has featured sparingly for Liverpool since then. In recent matches he has got a lot of opportunities but hasn’t made it count as he has zero goals and zero assists in three matches.
Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin wanted to sign him this January as he was a target along with Ivan Perisic and Christian Eriksen. The latter two were shrugged off by the club as their salary demands were too high but Shaqiri didn’t have such a problem. However it is reported that Shaqiri refused to go to a team that was involved in a relegation battle. Serie A club Lazio is also interested in him as even the Lazio sporting director confessed his admiration for the player. It is widely expected that Xherdan Shaqiri won’t be at the club after this summer as Liverpool want to make some high profile signings and will finance through some selling of fringe players.
