There was a time when Lonzo Ball was one of the NBA’s most hyped perimeter guards. However, due to injuries, Ball has missed out on reaching the potential he was tipped to reach. Recently, the Bulls star made headlines as he named his top 5 defenders list in the NBA, ignoring a few big stars such as Rudy Gobert and Anthony Davis.

During an appearance on the WAE Show, Ball selected his top five NBA defenders which included Victor Wembanyama and Bam Adebayo, notably leaving out one of the three players who have won Defensive Player of the Year four times in league history. Ball also claimed that he was “sick” when the host of the podcast mentioned Boston Celtics’ Jrue Holiday and swapped Lu Dort for Holiday.

Leaving out the NBA 2024 DPOY in Gobert was an audacious move by Ball. One could well and truly argue over Ball’s top 5 defensive players pick.

The only players selected by Ball who were named to the First Team All-Defense this season were Victor Wembanyama and Adebayo. Behind Gobert in the Defensive Player of the Year vote were the brilliant San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat players, who came in second and third respectively.

The San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama has had an excellent debut 2023-24 NBA season. With a lot of expectations to meet, the 2023 first-overall selection succeeded in having a fantastic season by winning Rookie of the Year. Lonzo Ball was full of praise for Wembanyama on the WAE Show.

He might be the best defensive player we've ever seen. He's going to average like five to six blocks one year.. He has a chance to be the best player ever.

Wembanyama has already demonstrated that he can be one of the best players in the league. Even the Spurs seem to have a promising future that might see them become contenders in the next five years, although they weren’t at their best during the 2023–24 NBA season.

Wembanyama concluded his rookie campaign in the NBA with 71 games played, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks per game while shooting 32.5% from three-point range and 46.5% from the field. It remains to be seen how Wembanyama performs in his upcoming 2024-25 NBA campaign with the Spurs and if he can live up to Lonzo Ball’s praise.
