Lorenzo Musetti made Italian history on Saturday, August 3, after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the Olympic bronze medal match. The Italian became the first player from his country in 100 years to win an Olympic tennis medal.
The last Italian to win an Olympic medal was Uberto de Morpurgo in 1924, who also won the bronze medal in Paris. This result comes as a massive boost for Musetti, who seems to be enjoying the best form of his tennis career.
For Auger-Aliassime, it is a massive disappointment not to add to the bronze medal he won in mixed doubles in Paris. The Canadian won the bronze medal partnering Gabriela Dabrowski on Friday.
Auger-Aliassime also represented Canada in the men’s doubles with Milos Raonic but lost in the first round. It remains to be seen whether he will play in front of his home fans at the Canadian Masters, which starts less than two days after the end of the tennis events at the Paris Olympics.
Lorenzo Musetti caps off a memorable summer with a bronze medal
It has been the best few months of Lorenzo Musetti‘s career, as he seems to be finding his peak tennis form at the right time. The Italian gave Novak Djokovic an almighty scare in the French Open third round but eventually lost in five sets.
However, it was only the start of his best summer season, as he reached the semi-finals of Stuttgart. After that, he reached the finals of the Queen’s Club and the Croatia Open. As a result of his incredible performances on grass, he earned a date with Djokovic in his first Grand Slam semifinal at Wimbledon. However, he lost to the Serb in straight sets.
After that, he represented Italy at the Paris Olympics. Due to the withdrawal of World No.1 Jannik Sinner, Musetti was the highest-profile Italian male player in the Olympic Games. He never let the country down, winning the bronze medal by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets.
