It was an emotional moment for Lorenzo Musetti after a hard-fought win over Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard on Monday (July 8). Musetti reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time after he knocked out the Frenchman with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 on Court 2.
Musetti produced his best performance at a major event today as the 25th seed previously reached the fourth round of the French Open in 2021 and 2023. After his two-hour, 25-minute win, the Italian said that he was not an emotional person but was finding it hard to stop his tears as he realized his childhood dream and thanked his family for their support.
It's tough for me to get emotional, but today I will. I have been dreaming about this moment since I was a kid. I have a family, a really beautiful family who have always supported me as I chased my dream. It is really tough to speak.Lorenzo Musetti said after the match
Qualifier Mpetshi Perricard, who also celebrated his birthday today, played his first fourth-round match at the SW19. His loss to Musetti made the Italian the seventh from his country to reach the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. He will next face either Alexander Zverev or Taylor Fritz.
Lorenzo Musetti’s head-to-head record with Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz
Lorenzo Musetti met 4th seed Alexander Zverev just once, which the latter won after Musetti retired mid-match. They played each other in the ATP Masters 1000 Madrid in the 2022 Round of 16.
Against Taylor Fritz, Musetti is 1-2 in their head-to-head meetings. They last met in the 2024 ATP Masters 1000 Monte-Carlo Round of 16, which the Italian won in straight sets. If Fritz reaches the quarterfinals, he will lock horns with Musetti for the second time at Wimbledon as they previously met in the first round in 2022.
All the previous wins by Musetti at this Wimbledon have not come in three straight sets. He started his campaign with a four-set win over Constant Lestienne, followed by an epic five-setter against compatriot Luciano Darderi. Then he locked horns with Francisco Comesana and knocked him out in four sets.
Before arriving at Wimbledon, Musetti reached the final of the Queen’s Club Championships but failed to win his first title of the season after losing to America’s Tommy Paul in straight sets. The former World No. 15 has lifted two titles on the ATP Tour since turning pro in 2019.
