The 22-year-old took on Opelka for the second time at the Flushing Meadows. In 2021, Musetti was ousted from the tournament in the third round after the American beat him in straight sets. This time, Musetti rose to the occasion against Opelka.

The Italian clinched the opening set in a tiebreak. He was immediately pushed back in the second set, with Opelka quickly leveling the scores. Musetti bounced back in the third set and then played a close fourth set to win the match 7-6(3), 1-6, 6-1, 7-5.

After playing back-to-back intense matches and spending close to seven hours on the court, Musetti must now rest and recuperate as quickly as he can. He is set to face Brandon Nakashima in the third round after the American defeated Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
