Lorenzo Musetti Roger federer 1
Lorenzo Musetti, the talented Italian tennis player, has drawn comparisons to the Swiss great Roger Federer in recent times. The World No.284 ranked youngster is a junior Grand Slam champion and has been ranked No. 1 in the ITF junior circuit.
Gianluca Naso, the technical director of the Genoa Tennis Park Club in Italy knows all about the young Italian prodigy. Musetti is a member of the academy which is one of best tennis academies in Italy.
Naso recently spoke in an interview to Ubitennis about Musetti’s game, his potential and the similarities to Roger Federer.
Musetti’s technique reminds me of Federer’s: Naso
When asked who Musetti’s game reminded him of the most, Gianluca Naso said,
“I don’t want (to compare) but Federer comes to mind obviously,”
Gianluca Naso rates the serve of the Swiss great as the best and toughest one to imitate. He added that Musetti has a similar technique of changing the pace within points, the backhand, and forward runs to net.
“Roger Federer’s service is unique and inimitable. The ease of being able to change pace within a single point, knowing how to play on other surfaces, knowing how to use the back, he also likes to come forward,” Naso said.
“Like Federer he has the ease with which he manages to hit the ball, especially from the right side it reminds you a little of the Swiss,” he added.
Sponsorships and long hair
He further added to the list of similarities that both Musetti and Federer are sponsored by Nike (Federer is currently sponsored by Uniqlo). Naso also mentioned that Musetti has the same long hair that Federer once had.
“The fact that he is also sponsored by Nike and maybe the long hair that Federer once had is beautiful!” Naso concluded.
Training with the Swiss legend
The 18-year old was lucky enough to have hitting sessions with World No 1 Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev and of course his idol Federer during the 2020 Australian Open.
“It was all very special, but the first time meeting Roger will stay with me forever. He’s been my idol, my favourite player from since I can remember. It was a dream,” he said following his meeting with Federer.
The up and coming youngster is making big strides in the tennis world and it is only a matter of time before he starts challenging for Grand Slams.
