The NFL had its first international game of the 2024 season in London this weekend and how thrilling it was! With a 35-16 triumph against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chicago Bears built a three-game winning streak– their first ever since the 2020 season.
Late in the Saturday Night Football game between the Bears and Jaguars, fans were heard chanting something that made Caleb Williams pause for a second to understand its relation to the game. It remains a mystery whether he understood or not.
It happened in the fourth quarter of the game when the 2024 No. 1 pick had already delivered a historic outing with four touchdowns at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite it arguably being considered to be the Jaguars’ second home, the entire stadium was rooting for the Bears. In the final quarter, when it was foreseeable that the Bears will win, the audience started chanting “Green Bay Sucks.”
Ignoring the team competing in the game, fans were referencing the oldest rival of the Windy City– Green Bay Packers. The chant was so loud that even the broadcasting booth couldn’t help but address it. However, the Bears aren’t scheduled to face Green Bay until November 17, which is a home game and the first-ever with Williams as the starter.
Seeing the social media reaction to the rookie quarterback’s performance on Saturday, it’s quite obvious that he won them over. But the energy inside the stadium for something else as he became one of the very few Chicago quarterbacks to perform this well at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Caleb Williams shuts critics up with record-breaking performance
After two of the first three games of the season, Williams came under intense scrutiny as critics questioned his draft pick as the first overall. However, he shut all their mouths with a three-game winning streak and set a record of highest completion percentage of 79.3 in a single game.
Along with four touchdowns– two to tight end Cole Kmet first half and two to wide receiver Keenan Allen in the second half, the rookie signal-caller completed 23 out of his 29 passes for 226 yards and one interception. He also recorded four carries for 56 rushing yards.
Williams might have crumbled earlier this season, but he quickly balanced himself and improved to a 4-2 season standing. He and the team are now heading to a bye week before their upcoming matchup against the No. 2 overall pick, Jayden Daniels’ Washington Commanders.
