Louis Riddick claimed Titans' draft target Cam Ward has similar swashbuckling attributes as Chiefs 3x Super Bowl-wining QB Patrick Mahomes.

In Louis Riddick’s eyes, Tennessee Titans’ target Cam Ward is an exceptional athlete. The former NFL safety claimed Ward reminded him of 3x Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes.

Ward’s stock has risen since the NFL combine. He and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders were neck and neck at one point, but now Ward seems the favorite to be drafted first overall by the Titans. Riddick covered Ward extensively during his college days at both Washington State and Miami. He noticed certain traits in Ward that reminded him of Patrick Mahomes.

You want a guy that has no limitations [and] quite honestly [Cam Ward] has no limitations. I see this as a perfect marriage [Ward to Titans] on the football field… Look I said [I am confident about] Cam Ward because of the way he plays. He reminds me of Patrick, he reminds me of Mahomes.

Louis Riddick said on Wednesday’s episode on NFL Live

Ward was exceptional in his final year with the Hurricanes. Although they didn’t play post-season football, Ward threw 305 completions (67.2 % completion rate) for 4313 yards, 43 overall touchdowns, and 7 interceptions.

He can be unconventional. Throw the football from all kinds of weird angles and then just put a bunch of horsepower on it when he needs to [like Mahomes].

Louis Riddick said

Riddick isn’t the first ex-NFL player turned football expert to compare Ward with Mahomes. Previously, NBC’s Chris Simms offered a similar view about the 22-year-old shot-caller from Texas.

Cam Ward is in the category of [Aaron] Rodgers and [Patrick Mahomes]. Caleb Williams [Chicago Bears] could do it, Josh Allen [Buffalo Bills] a little bit… Cam Ward can get it out like a shortstop… And he can do it with great force on the ball, and accuracy.

Chris Simms, former NFL QB said on his show Chris Simms Unbuttoned

Unlike Ward, Patrick Mahomes was considered a draft liability

Mahomes may be football royalty and the unofficial face of the NFL, but the situation was much different during his draft year. The Texas Tech graduate wasn’t viewed as an instant starter, let alone a top-10 pick, back in 2017. Several analysts labeled him as rash and someone who takes too many risks.

Mahomes had a losing record for the Red Rangers. He won 13 games compared to 16 losses in his three years for the Texas school. Yet Andy Reid, Brett Veach, and the Kansas City Chiefs aggressively pursued Mahomes. They selected him 10th overall instead of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.

Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe wasn’t on board with the decision. Sharpe pointed out that Reid and the Chiefs execs knew that Mahomes was extremely rough and required a lot of work to make him an NFL-worthy quarterback.

Andy Reid—the first thing he said was the kid [Patrick Mahomes] needs a lot of work, and [he] is not gonna play… But why did you trade up to get him just to wait on him? … And I don’t believe in the system, the passing system in the Big 12, guys have not been successful with that transition to the NFL.

Shannon Sharpe argued on FS1’s The Facility

Daniel Jeremiah’s biggest draft regret

Daniel Jeremiah’s mock drafts have slowly become an annual event for football fans. Most of his predictions tend to align with reality, but there’s always one player who shatters every expectation. For Jeremiah, it turned out to be Patrick Mahomes.

Patrick Mahomes [draft projection] was as bad as it gets. He was… a legit boom or bust and that was like the greatest imagination of a boom could look like, his like 10 levels above that.

Daniel Jeremiah recently said on the Up & Adams Show

NFL.com gave Mahomes a 6.30 grade, which is considered a perennial backup or a B+ starter at best. Mahomes proved everyone wrong. Besides winning three rings, he is a 3x Super Bowl MVP, 2x NFL MVP, 6x Pro Bowler, and 3x All-Pro with a win and loss ratio of 89-23 in the regular season and 17-4 in the postseason.

The Titans would be hoping that Cam Ward turns out like Mahomes. Ward is a -10000 (BetMGM) favorite to be drafted No. 1 by the Titans.
