India’s recently concluded tour Down Under saw the young guns step up in the Test series. The hard fought series saw youngsters rising to the occasion when the side needed them. While Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the bowlers, Shubman Gill impressed one and all in his debut series. Gill scored 259 runs at an average of 51.80. And finished the series as the team’s 4th highest scorer.

Former Australia batsman Michael Hussey is mighty impressed by the Punjab batsman’s performance. Hussey ‘loves the way’ Gill builds his innings. He hailed him as a talent to watch out for in the future.

There were some wonderful performances from India. I think Gill’s innings was superb. He looks like a real player for the future of India. I love the way he goes about it. And of course, Pant played one of the most incredible innings I have seen,” Hussey was quoted as saying by Khaleej Times.

I was certainly not writing India off

While many experts wrote off India following the Adelaide debacle, Hussey shares that he never expected India to go down without a fight. The Aussie legend adds that he is mighty impressed with stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane‘s attitude. And the feels that was the reason India bounced back from the eight-wicket humbling in Adelaide.

I was certainly not writing India off at the stage, but I thought it was going to be difficult to come back from that, plus their captain (Virat Kohli) was going home. And of course, Mohammad Shami was injured as well. I thought that was going to be a massive loss, but I was really buoyed by Ajinkya Rahane’s comment at the toss at the MCG Test. He had a very positive attitude, he kept the guys nice and positive. He gave new players the opportunity and I think he got them to focus on the positive things. I think that really worked,” Hussey further said.

Having aced the Australian challenge, Gill is gearing up for his home debut. He is expected to open the innings with Rohit Sharma in the Test series against England which kicks off on February 5.
