For Luana Alonso, the Paris Olympics will be an unforgettable experience for all the wrong reasons. The Paraguayan swimmer and Southern Methodist University swimmer competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was in the Olympic Village in Paris. But she has been asked to leave the venue after her conduct has caused trouble.
Luana Alonso made an unapproved visit to Disneyland Paris rather than hang around with her contingent. To make matters worse, she has been accused of “Creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay.”
The country’s Olympic Chief Larissa Schaerer wrote in her statement. The statement is vaguely worded, but it appears to be done intentionally.
Her presence is creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. We thank her for proceeding as instructed, as it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Athletes' Village.Larissa Schaerer’s statement read (H/T: The Sun)
The primary issue here seems to be that Alonso was wearing outfits from her personal wardrobe that may have been a bit too skimpy for the Olympics. Athletes are expected to stick to the outfits provided in the official kit of the Olympics rather than wear their own choice of clothing during practices and events. Alonso violated these rules by wearing outfits that were not part of the kit within the Olympic Village.
Luana Alonso has retired from swimming
The swimmer whose Olympics ended during the heat round of the event expressed her regret over failing to qualify and announced that she was walking away from the sport.
It's official! I'm retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for your support! Sorry Paraguay. I just have to say thank you!Luana Alonso wrote in her Instagram post
She has now returned to the United States and is enjoying her time in Disneyland.
She had continued to stay in the Village after the announcement of her retirement as well. A report from The Daily Mail added that the swimmer was socializing with other athletes in addition to wearing skimpy clothing.
Luana Alonso finished sixth in the 100M heat with a time of 1:03.09. She fared better in the Tokyo Olympics, where she clocked in at 1:00:37. Following her loss, she penned a heartfelt post on Instagram addressed to her followers and the sport of swimming.
Swimming: Thank you for allowing me to dream, you taught me to fight, to try, perseverance, sacrifice, discipline, and many more things.Luana Alonso wrote in her Instagram post
She had hinted that the Paris Olympics would be her final ones in a post on Instagram last month. Alonso spent a season at Virginia Tech before she transferred to SMU and became popular for being the girl who had a tattoo of the Olympics rings on her hip.
