“Luckily, we were in the right spot at the right time,” Corey LaJoie is ecstatic as he secures his career-best pole in Atlanta
Corey LaJoie
Corey LaJoie who sports the No.7 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is on cloud 9 right now as he has achieved his career-best position of P5 on Sunday at the newly revamped Atlanta Motor Speedway. Corey LaJoie who races for the Spire Motorsports had his career-best day in 169 Cup Series starts over the years. 2022 seems to be promising enough for him as he achieved the top 15 thrice in 5 starts.
Corey LaJoie who started on P33 on Sundays’ Folds of Honor Quiktrip 500 laid back during the initial stages of the race as per the team’s plans on superspeedways like the Daytona or the Talladega. He finished 26th after the initial stage and moved up to 23rd by the end of the second stage.
During the final stage Corey quickly moved up evading crash after crash to remain 13th and during the very final moments, another crash involving Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Chase Briscoe, Chris Buescher, and Justin Haley moved him up to 6th and with Christopher Bell penalized, Corey LaJoie finally scored his first ever P5.
“But luckily, these NextGen cars are pretty rugged and it held up,” says Corey LaJoie during the post-race interview
Not to mention the fact that Corey felt like he was flying as he literally flew into the grass during lap 146 leaving him airborne taking some damage but he ended up safe and kept racing as the NextGen cars allowed him to do so as they were durable enough to keep going. Corey LaJoie added saying that he felt ecstatic after the race and said that he was fortunate enough to be in the right spot at the right time.
“The Fraternal Order of Eagles that was on our car this week, that was pretty real life because it felt like I was flying there when I went through the grass, but luckily, these NextGen cars are pretty rugged and it held up,” said Corey LaJoie.
“It looked like they were wrecking Daytona, Days of Thunder coming to the checkered, luckily, we were in the right spot at the right time,” Corey LaJoie added.
Corey LaJoie further added saying that he wouldn’t believe if he’d score 3 out of 5 top 15s this year and that he would laugh if someone told him that but he concluded by saying that a lot of work has to be done and that it was a good day in the end for him.
“I think if you would have told me that we would start the year with three out of five top 15s, I would have probably laughed at you, we still have a lot of work to do, but today was a good day,” Corey LaJoie concluded.
As Corey LaJoie stands at 24th in the Championship rankings the question remains whether he be able to secure a better position in COTA this weekend or remain in the battle for midfield positions?
