The Atlanta Braves brought a hometown hero for the first pitch of the Major League Baseball (MLB) match against the Colorado Rockies. On Thursday night (September 5), American rapper and actor Ludacris threw the ceremonial first pitch, which had every buzzing. Fans, however, were a bit baffled by the Atlanta native’s humongous prosthetic arms and a giant pair of Nike Air Force Ones.
The first pitch is one of the most iconic traditions in basketball where a celebrity guest throws a ball to mark the start of the game. Over the years, many famous people from various walks of life have been given this honor, with the latest being Ludacris.
Ludacris made the crowd go bonkers when he entered the field in a cart with the Braves’ mascot Blooper. In an instant, the audience realized that the rapper’s attire was a nod to the character he portrayed in the 2004 video for his song “Get Back” directed by Spike Jonze.
The Grammy winner wore a silver watch on the giant arms and even covered his arms with realistic tattoos. He also sported the Atlanta Braves white and red jersey with his name and number on the back.
To take it up a notch, Ludacris accessorized with golden sunglasses when he threw the ball. After the throw, he turned to the audience and gave them a bow. While he seemingly had great fun in his unique attire, fans were ecstatic in the stadium. The huge prosthetic arms and shoes hold a great history and symbolism for the rapper and his fans.
Besides throwing out the first pitch, Ludacris was also honored with a bobblehead giveaway, which featured him in a throwback Hank Aaron Braves jersey. Additionally, the first 15,000 fans at Truist Park were also gifted a unique Ludacris bobblehead.
Fans in splits after watching Ludacris’ first pitch at Atlanta Braves’ MLB game
While some people often make a mockery of themselves at the MLB ceremonial pitch, Ludacris received a ton of appreciation. Fans saw one of the most unique MLB pitches of their lives at the Atlanta Braves game and social media was all praise for the American rapper and actor. Some fans even called Ludacris’ pitch better than most other celebrities’ efforts.
Here are some of the fan reactions:
The most prominent theme in most comments was that Ludacris took everybody back to the 2000s. The hometown hero’s presence, however, did not give the Atlanta Braves the boost they needed against the Colorado Rockies. The home side lost 3-1 on Thursday (September 5) night after Michael Toglia and Ezequiel Tovar hit solo home runs for the visitors.
