The Open Championship 2024 is set to begin today. Ludvig Aberg will be hoping to repeat his fellow Swede Henrik Stenson’s historic Open Championship triumph at Royal Troon in 2016. Stenson overcame Phil Mickelson in a thrilling match, shooting a final-round 63 to create a new tournament record of 20-under par.
Aberg will make his Open debut this week. He recalled watching Stenson’s victory with his pals and felt that the day “should be a national holiday in Sweden” since it was a watershed point in Swedish golf.
I've said a few times before that day should be a national holiday in Sweden. It was a very cool day. I vividly remember watching that with my friends, and it's cool to see what he's done for Swedish golf. The Open is the major that's closer to home, definitely, and it is the one that I've watched growing up a little bit more, a little bit closer. So I do feel that connection to The Open and to the UK. I love being here. I love playing these tournaments, and I’m really looking forward to it.Ludvig Aberg said to the reporters
Aberg experienced disappointment at the recent Scottish Open, where he held a 54-hole lead before faltering on Sunday. He is however confident that the experience will serve him well at The Open Championship, and is focused on fine-tuning his swing mechanics in the early part of this week, aiming to be in top form for his debut at the historic Royal Troon links.

Henrik Stenson won the 2016 Open Championship at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. The competition took place from July 14 to 17, 2016. Stenson fired 63 in the final round for a total of 264, a record 20 under par. He finished three shots ahead of runner-up and 2013 champion Phil Mickelson.
The final round on Sunday, July 17, 2016, featured an epic battle between Stenson and Mickelson. They drew away from the field, and Stenson finally won. Stenson’s win at the 145th Open Championship was a historic one.
Stenson established a new record for the lowest score in a major event. His final round 63 tied Johnny Miller for the best-ever final round by a major winner, and at age 40, he became the first Swedish male to win a major title. He had achieved eight top 6-finishes in majors without a win prior to this breakthrough victory.
