A couple of days ago, the Athletics made a huge move in the 2024 offseason. A few months after leaving the city of Oakland, the team dished out a large $67 million deal for Luis Severino, which shocked many. The pitcher would reveal his reason why.
Severino did not have the best of times with the New York Yankees in the 2023 season and become a free agent after that. He would join their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets on a one-year deal in an attempt to revive his career.
The right-hander went on to enjoy a positive season with the Mets. He went 11-7 in his 31 starts and posted an ERA of 3.91. He also picked up 161 strikeouts along the way, making him a solid choice in the pitching rotation.
After rejecting the qualifying offer from the Mets, he became a free agent. A few days later, he agreed to join the Athletics on a 3-year deal. This is the biggest contract the A’s have offered to any player in their history.
On Saturday, he took part in the introductory press conference. During this, the Dominican international claimed that the team (Athletics) looked like the playoff team they were a few years ago when they faced the Mets in August. In the three-game series, the A’s took two games against them.
Luis Severino was asked at his introductory press conference what drew him to the Athletics:

The Athletics made it to the playoffs three years in a row from 2018 to 2020. On two occasions they lost in the Wild Card Game and during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, they were eliminated in the Division Series 3-1 by their division rivals, Houston Astros.
Fans react to Luis Severino’s reason to join the Athletics
Fans on social media were left shocked when reports of Luis Severino agreeing to a deal with the Athletics came out. The amount involved in this deal was one thing that took many fans by surprised.
A major reason for the shock among the fans was the timing of this deal. Just after the A’s left Oakland, they decided to spend huge money on a player. This is something that made the fans upset about this move.
After Severino revealed his reason, users on X ridiculed him. Many of them called him out and spoke about the money involved. One user wrote, “bulls**t it’s the money,” as the possible reason why the former Yankees and Mets star decided to join the A’s.

$67 million dollars is what drew him to the Athletics

This is the type of back-filled justification that we all give in response to job interview questions that ask "what drew you to this position?" lol

The ? drew him to OaklamentoVegas and rightfully so! Good for Seve!

It’s ok to want to get paid, Luis. We understand. But you can’t expect us to believe the A’s have a better upside than the Mets (or anyone else). Playing in a minor league park for 3 years, where few other FAs want to go, isn’t a winning formula. But you got paid, and that’s ok.

Just say it was the money lol

Dude would rather play in a minor league stadium and not play in October just to get a couple more million??
We know the truth Sevy & it’s ok lol pic.twitter.com/Nd17O6pWyk

Severino is now part of a projected rotation that includes left-hander JP Sears, along with right-handers Joey Estes and Mitch Spence. Both Estes and Spence impressed the fans with their performance in their rookie seasons. Given the experience of this rotation, the A’s could go out and sign one more big name to bolster their squad for the 2025 season.
