Uruguay legend Luis Suarez played his last game for the National team on Friday night as the 37-year-old received an emotional farewell from fans, friends, and family. Suarez captained Uruguay in his last match as the Centenario was witness to a nervy encounter against Paraguay. Fans bid farewell as one of the best strikers of this generation called time on his International career.

After announcing earlier that the game against Paraguay would be his last in National team colors, the stadium set up a mesmerizing tribute for the No. 9. Massive banners reading ‘Luis 9 Eterno‘ were held up as the veteran donned the No. 9 for Uruguay one last time. Even though scoring in his final game would’ve been the perfect farewell, the game against Paraguay ended 0-0.

Suarez was denied a brilliant volley in the first half as his shot hit the post and went out of play. Even though it’s a shame that El Pistolero bowed out without a goal or a win, his story has already been written.

Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. send emotional farewell message as Luis Suarez reduced to tears

Luis Suarez made no effort to conceal his emotions in his final game for Uruguay. Following the full-time whistle, a teary-eyed Suarez was surrounded by his family. After coming close to reaching the Copa America final in July, Suarez had to settle for third place in the tournament hosted by the United States.

Cameras captured Suarez inconsolably watching on as moments from his incredible career played on the big screen. In a heartwarming moment, Suarez’s closest friends—Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. popped up on the big screen. Messi congratulated him on his beautiful career with the National team before reminding the player that he’s lucky to have his dear ones beside him.

Neymar also sent a farewell message for the Uruguayan, which he watched with a smile on his face. The crowd erupted in cheers and celebrated the legacy left behind a striker not many can claim to be better than. Supporters reminisced about how Messi, Suarez, and Neymar used to light up the big stage during their playing days at Barcelona.
