Amid a noisy trade market, the Los Angeles Lakers have stayed not just active, but strategic. Their stars have followed suit. LeBron James continues to lead with purpose, while Luka Doncic is now making headlines of his own. All offseason, speculation swirled: Would he stay? Was he stalling? Entertaining offers? Conflicting reports kept the basketball world on edge.
But now, all doubts have been laid to rest. Doncic has firmly chosen Los Angeles as his home. With a decisive move, the Slovenian sensation has inked a three-year, $165 million max contract extension with the Lakers, committing his future to the city, the fans, and the legacy.
But the story didn’t stop with the contract. No, Doncic gave fans something far more powerful than the commitment on paper. In a gesture that speaks louder than any stat line, Doncic announced he would be donating $5 million to 77 young athletes chasing the same basketball dream he once dared to believe in.
Today I’m also committing $5 million to help 77 young athletes around the world chase their dreams, just like I did. Basketball gave me everything, and I’m lucky to be able to give back and help the next generation.

Why specifically 77? It’s his number. But now, it’s not just a number, it’s a symbol. A symbol of hope, of giving back, of never forgetting where you came from.

It should come as no surprise that Doncic and his foundation have made it their mission to support the next generation of young athletes by becoming involved in the community.
Luka Doncic is in line for a huge payday after signing 3-year deal with the Lakers
All this while, the Lakers’ star Luka Doncic had all the cards in his hand in a bid to make a decision regarding his contract extension. It’s safe to say that he chose the best deal for himself, earning him a huge payday from the Lakers in the long run.

For context, before signing his extension, Doncic had two options: either to opt for a 4-year $222 million deal or opt for a 3-year $165 million deal. The Slovenian went for the latter. One would say that this was quite a smart move by Doncic and his camp, as in the long run, he will be eligible for a 5-year contract that will exceed $400 million in 2028 should he choose to exercise his player option.
The current contract that Doncic signed runs till the 2028-29 NBA season. The two parties were anticipated to reach an agreement on a new contract extension, with Doncic wrapping up his Jordan Brand tour in Los Angeles before heading back to Europe to play for Slovenia in the EuroBasket 2025 competition.
Luka Doncic had kind words for the Lakers’ new arrivals ahead of the upcoming NBA season
As soon as Doncic signed his contract extension with the Lakers, their GM, Rob Pelinka, organized a press conference to announce this matter and make it public. That said, Luka Doncic also spoke about various topics apart from his extension, one of them being the new arrivals in Los Angeles during this trade market.
Doncic had nothing but praise for his new teammates and hopes to achieve great success with them this season.
Yeah, honestly, I think we have a great team. We have what we need to compete for the championship. I try to win every game, no matter what. And, you know, we got some new great guys on our team. And, you know, we’re going to go for it.

After being knocked out early in the 2025 NBA playoffs, Doncic and the Lakers will hope to make amends in the upcoming season. With the arrivals of the likes of DeAndre Ayton, Marcus Smart, Jake LaRavia, Doncic, and co. hope that these additions will be more than enough to compete for the glorious NBA 2026 title.
