The Los Angeles Lakers suffered a frustrating defeat against the Golden State Warriors at the Crypto.com Arena. The sole reason for the defeat was the poor shooting by Lakers forwards, especially their newest star Luka Doncic in particular.

For the first time since the Lakers acquired Doncic, his magic vanished. The team’s offensive engine was foiled by Golden State’s defense, and missed scoring opportunities, causing added criticism after the game.

Notably, in a recent segment of the Get Up show, former NBA player Jay Williams was highly critical of Doncic’s performance. Williams made an unusual comparison regarding the Lakers star. He compared his performance to the recent US stock market crash over US President Donald Trump‘s tariffs.

Not only yesterday did the stock market take a hit with his(Donald Trump’s) tariffs but Luka’s stock took a major hit. … If you’re going to be a liability on the defensive end, then you need to be prolific on the offensive end.

Jay Williams said

For context, after US President Donald Trump’s massive trade tariffs fueled worries of a full-scale trade war and a worldwide economic collapse, the US stock market plummeted on Thursday. This came with the Wall Street benchmark indices closing with the biggest single-day percentage losses since 2020. However, NBA fans were left confused by Williams’ remarks regarding Doncic.

Doncic finished the game with 19 points on just 6-for-17 shooting, including 0-for-6 from the 3-point line. For the first time in his previous 18 games, he did not score at least 20 points, despite adding eight rebounds and seven assists.

Barring the Warriors game, Doncic has been sensational for the Lakers, performing at his highest levels in offense. In addition, his HC JJ Redick also praised him for his recent performances. It will be interesting to watch how Doncic bounces back from the recent criticism.

Luka Doncic provided an important injury update in recent loss

Luka Doncic, the Lakers’ top guard, had a bad night Thursday as the team lost a crucial game versus the Warriors, narrowing the already slim lead in the Western Conference rankings. For the first time in his Lakers career, Doncic failed to make a 3-pointer in the 123-116 defeat.

Doncic’s bad shooting performance raised questions about whether he is fully recovered. This is related to his performance on Monday against the Rockets, where he sustained a left elbow injury late in the game. Doncic opened up on this as per the Los Angeles Times.

It’s fine. That’s my left so it’s fine, I shoot them with the right.

Luka Doncic said

The Lakers are 46-30, continuing a worrying run that has seen them lose nine out of their last 15 games, albeit mostly caused by injury. With a 40-21 record on March 6, the Lakers were the second seed. They are 46-30 and the No. 4 seed going into their game against the Pelicans on Friday.

Luka Doncic was highly critical of his performance against the Warriors

The Los Angeles Lakers are in a strong position to advance far in the playoffs thanks to Luka Doncic, who has revolutionized the team’s offensive output. But in Thursday night’s loss to the Golden State Warriors, Doncic was anything but his usual self, putting on what was likely his worst effort since joining the Lakers. The Slovenian knows this and opened up on his performance recently.

I think they were playing great defense. I think we didn’t play with enough stress, especially me, so that performance for me is unacceptable. When I play like that, it makes it harder for the team to win. So just gotta figure that out.

The Lakers had a chance to pass the Houston Rockets for the No. 2 seed and secure their position as the third seed. Rather, the Warriors rose to No. 5 and Los Angeles dropped back to No. 4. Only time will tell how the Lakers finish before the end of the regular season.
