The Los Angeles Lakers are unfortunate in terms of injuries and the latest casualty was their star player Luka Doncic. Returning to home court after a long eight-game road trip, the Lakers recorded a closely fought 119-115 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers at the Crypto.com Arena on Thursday night.
Luka Doncic and the Lakers have not had the best of forms at home this season. It was just their 13th win in 21 games. The win propelled them to fifth place in the Western Conference standings with a 31-19 record. Meanwhile, the 76ers, who are coming off a setback of their own, dropped to 29-22 and sit at sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.
Since the arrival of Doncic in LA, the Slovenian guard has been the focal point of their team. The Lakers front office are building their roster around the 26-year-old as they prepare for life in the post-LeBron James era. Despite their impressive record, many still do not view them as championship contenders this season due to their poor defense.
The ‘Big Three’ of Doncic, James and Austin Reaves have barely played together this season. James missed the first few weeks of the season, then Reaves got hurt and made his return after over a month. Hence, it has been a struggle for head coach JJ Redick and his coaching staff.
With three and a half minutes left to the second quarter, Doncic was seen grabbing the back of his left leg. Till the injury, the Lakers guard recorded 10 points, four rebounds and two assists in 16 minutes.
After the injury, a frustrated Doncic was seen kicking the announcers table as he made his way into the tunnel. He did not return to the game in the second half.

The Lakers will hope that it is not a serious injury, with Reaves just making his return. Doncic has been playing at an MVP level this season and is currently averaging 32.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.6 assists. The Lakers are scheduled to take on the Golden State Warriors on February 7 at the Crypto.com Arena.
Austin Reaves hopes Luka Doncic’s injury is nothing major
When James missed the first 14 games of the 2025-26 campaign, Doncic and Reaves formed a formidable offensive partnership in his absence. Not just on the court but the two guards had a good relationship off the court as well.

Following the win, Reaves was hoping Doncic did not suffer a major injury and hoped for a speedy recovery in his post-match locker-room interview.
Hopefully nothing major. We need him, he’s our best player and the engine [for] a lot of the stuff we do. Hopefully we get good news tomorrow and I wish him nothing the best.
Austin Reaves told after the game

With Doncic ruled out for the second half and James not having the best of scoring nights, Reaves exploded off the bench on Thursday. It was just his second game since his return from injury.
Reaves scored a game-high 35 points to go along with six rebounds and two assists in just 25 minutes. But it was not just the points he scored, it was the efficiency that mattered. He shot at 70.6% from the field and made five of his eight three-pointers.
JJ Redick on the Luke Kennard’s trade
The Lakers made just one trade at the trade deadline. They acquired Luke Kennard in exchange for Gabe Vincent and a 2032 second-round draft pick. Kennard may be the Lakers’ only deadline acquisition, but he addresses their biggest offensive need. Redick offered his thoughts on the trade in his post-match press conference.
I’ve known him for about 12 years now. He’s one of the best shooters in the NBA and I’m going to encourage him to shoot more. One of the underrated parts of his game is his ability to move and create second actions.

The Lakers are ranked 22nd in the league from beyond the arc this season. So, a three-point specialist like Kennard is an important move for the Lakers heading into the postseason.
