Luka Doncic on course to win NBA title as Kobe Bryant did after defeating three 50+ win teams in playoffs

The odds are against the Dallas Mavericks as they will face the star-studded Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Luka Doncic on course to win NBA title as Kobe Bryant did after defeating three 50+ win teams in playoffs

Luka Doncic could become the first player since Kobe Bryant to beat three 50+ teams in the playoffs and win the NBA Title

Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks have achieved an incredible feat of defeating three 50+ win teams in the Western Conference playoffs, a feat that the late great Kobe Bryant led Lakers achieved in 2010. Bryant went on to win the NBA title that year. Doncic could join him as a fellow champion if he can lead his team to the title.

Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers were the last team to beat three 50+ wins teams in all three rounds of the playoffs before reaching the NBA Finals. Doncic and his team have done the same after 14 years, beating the Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and now the Minnesota Timberwolves en route to the NBA Finals. The late great superstar went on to win the last of his 5 NBA titles. Doncic could rewrite history if he can lead his team to win their second title in franchise history.

There is one more similarity between the two teams. Bryant had Pau Gasol and a bunch of good players beside them to win that title. On the other hand, the Boston Celtics signed star forward Rasheed Wallace in free agency. That meant they had 5 All-Stars starting against a Lakers team that only had 2 All-Stars.

The Dallas Mavericks are in a similar boat. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving are the only All-Stars along with a bunch of good role players. Whereas the Boston Celtics have 5 All-Star caliber players as their starters. Doncic could join Bryant in hallowed company.

Luka Doncic’s Game 5 performance giving a glimpse of Dallas Mavericks potential

Even though the Dallas Mavericks won the first three games of the Western Conference Finals, there were questions about their gameplay. The games were close, and the Mavericks had to flip the switch to win games. At the same time, Doncic and Irving had bad shooting nights alternatively. When both together had an off night, they lost the game.

The Mavericks will not have that luxury against the Boston Celtics. They will have to keep the switch flipped on at all times if they are to famously win against the best team in the league. They might not even get any time to rest against the Celtics. Even though they showed that can play dominant basketball, analysts still question their ability to win the title against the Celtics.

If Game 5 gave a glimpse of how Doncic and Kyrie Irving can take turns to dominate a game, that could be their only recipe for success. Just like Bryant did back in 2010, Luka Doncic will have to lead the charge.
