When Luka Doncic was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, it shook the whole world up. The scale of the trade was so drastic and the decision to send Doncic away so idiotic that even President Donald Trump had a few choice words for Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison. After all, trading a younger, yet better player away for injury-prone Anthony Davis was something even casuals wouldn’t do.

The most upsetting part of this whole ordeal for Doncic was the smear campaign that Harrison and Patrick Dumont indulged in after trading him away and trying to justify their decision. Luka Doncic was made to look unprofessional in various leaks to Dallas media personnel, who reported these incidents to explain the thought process behind trading the Slovenian away, even if they didn’t make much sense.

Many of the Dallas faithful turned on the franchise, vowing never to patronize the team again. Although drafting Cooper Flagg leaves the team with a favorable outlook for years on end, many fans are still upset about the fact that their golden boy was traded away right in the middle of his prime for trumped-up reasons. Many people believe that this was an inside job by Adam Silver and the league to give LA its next superstar.

Amidst these reports, Dave McMenamin of ESPN has reported that Doncic remains motivated to prove Nico Harrison wrong. The Slovenian was recently pictured in his home country looking a lot leaner than he did when he was in America.

Doncic remains motivated by how the Dallas Mavericks treated him in the aftermath of the trade and how the Lakers’ season ended, and has committed to an offseason training and nutrition program, sources told ESPN. Doncic will also have a direct conduit to the Lakers’ coaching staff with him this summer. Lakers assistant coach Greg St. Jean will serve as an assistant coach with the Slovenian national team, sources told ESPN, as Doncic competes for his home country in the FIBA EuroBasket tournament.

Luka Doncic has the opportunity to write his name into NBA lore in Los Angeles

The Lakers’ fanbase demands titles, and Dončić’s sensational court vision, scoring prowess, and playmaking can unlock new dimensions in the team’s game plan. He has already shown his IQ in his seamless integration with LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Dončić must also embrace the intense pressure of playing for the Lakers, a franchise synonymous with championship expectations.

The recent reports about him working on a diet and improving his physique are indications that he’s now ready to take that step. While there was no justification for him gaining weight, he was still effective – five straight All-NBA First Team selections. Yet, he can become a better defender and pull his weight on that end of the floor after constant critique on his efforts on that end in his last two playoff losses.

Luka Dončić also needs to put the onus on himself to help foster team chemistry and display leadership, even with the presence of James. By mentoring younger players like Dalton Knecht and building synergy with veterans like LeBron, Dončić can create a cohesive unit that reflects the Lakers’ championship ethos. His playmaking, which enhances teammates’ performance, is already evident in the team’s fluid offense under coach JJ Redick.
