It was in February this year that a single trade deal shook not only the NBA but the whole sporting community in general. This was none other than Luka Doncic‘s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for their star defender, Anthony Davis, involving the Dallas Mavericks. This trade deal garnered widespread reactions from the whole sporting world.

One of them is NFL star Patrick Mahomes, in particular, who is also a huge Mavs fan. Mahomes recently opened up in an interview with USA Today that the Doncic deal left him stunned, and had him up for ‘a couple of hours.’ So much so that he even woke up his wife, Brittany Mahomes, from her sleep regarding the massive news.

It took me a while [to process everything]. I was actually at home when the Dončić trade happened in bed like I’m sure a lot of people were, and I remember rolling over and waking my wife up to tell her, like she cared as much as I did. She basically put on a good face for me, but she rolled over, went back to sleep, and it kept me up for a couple hours.

Patrick Mahomes told USA Today

Mahomes, a native of Tyler, Texas, was raised just away from Dallas and has always been a devoted Mavs’ supporter. Since the Kansas City Chiefs selected Mahomes in the 2017 NFL Draft, he has been seated courtside for Dallas games.

When his phone rang with news that was going to keep him up for hours, Mahomes was lying in bed, just ready to go to sleep. Doncic’s trade deal left stars like Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and LeBron James speechless as well.

However, the Mavs fans, just like Mahomes, had to deal with this heartbreaking news, which they surely did not see coming. NBA insider Shams Charania claimed that the agreement “materialized in the shadows.” The whole of Dallas was left enraged with the Mavs’ GM, Nico Harrison, for having concluded this deal.

Luka Doncic has huge leverage over the Lakers regarding his contract

Lakers star Luka Doncic is in his element at the moment. Ever since signing for the Lakers back in February, he has been one of the brightest stars on the roster, with the Lakers switching their leadership towards him over their older star, LeBron James.

Now, Doncic is eligible to sign a 4-year contract with his franchise this offseason. However, many NBA analysts believe otherwise. ESPN’s Bobby Marks feels that Doncic may sign a 3-year deal instead and opt for free agency the next summer.

Notably, ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst opened up on this matter recently. His case is different. As per Windorst, Doncic doesn’t have to sign a contract extension this offseason. Even if he doesn’t sign an extension, he can play the 4th season of his 5-year $215 million deal in 2025-26. He can then opt out of the upcoming season and become a free agent.

Doing so, Doncic would keep his options open at the negotiating table. This showcases the huge leverage the Lakers’ star currently has over his franchise. However, it is expected that the Slovenian will lead the franchise and sign the extension this offseason. It remains to be seen how this situation unfolds.

Western Conference executive warns Lakers regarding possible Luka Doncic-Nikola Jokic reunion

The Los Angeles Lakers surely signed Luka Doncic to lead their franchise for the next decade, this February, in exchange for their star Davis from the Mavericks. However, the Lakers had a poor 2024-25 NBA season as they were knocked out by their Western Conference rivals, the Minnesota Timberwolves, during the NBA playoffs. This would surely bring a series of doubts into Doncic’s head, who is yet to sign a contract extension.

Recently, a Western Conference executive made an alarming remark recently regarding Doncic possibly leaving the Lakers for their arch rivals. The exec claimed that a possible Nikola Jokic-Doncic reunion can be on the cards.

The Lakers have to be careful Luka just got his b*tt kicked by a team he handled easily last year, and now they’re telling him to wait another year before he can really compete. If Denver wins it all or comes close while Rob [Pelinka] makes it clear he doesn’t believe in Luka and LeBron as a combo, they could be a real threat for him this next season or two.

Doncic had an excellent season with the Lakers, posting 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per contest while converting 37.9% from three-point range and 43.8% from the field. The Lakers will likely keep hold of their superstar as they would not want to witness Jokic and Doncic terrorizing them in the future – in fact, no rival NBA team would want that.
