Luka Doncic‘s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers from the Dallas Mavericks left the whole Mavs fanbase in a complete heartbreak. Not only fans, but Doncic’s teammates were also left stunned after coming across the news back in February. At one point, it looked as if no one could move on from this, but with time, the Mavericks fan base and players have healed from this situation.

Although many have healed, they have not yet forgotten this massive blockbuster trade deal that happened in February. Doncic leaving the franchise has surely left a mark on the players as well as fans’ hearts positively and negatively.

This was on full display when his ex-teammate, Naji Marshall, was asked to name his top 5 Mavs players. Marshall’s response was surprising as he excluded his former teammate Luka Doncic from the top 5 but had Kyrie Irving in it.

Players like Tyson Chandler, Dirk Nowitzki, and Jason Kidd are worthy of being mentioned. They were instrumental in winning the first NBA title of the franchise. It did leave an underlying impact in Dallas and their fans.

However, Irving was included on the list merely due to his exceptional skill as a player. Despite his short tenure in Dallas, the nine-time All-Star has had a tremendous season. Surprisingly, Michael Finley was chosen over Luka Doncic, especially in light of the Slovenian’s influence on the team. This showcases that Doncic’s departure did affect Marshall in some way.

On Doncic’s part, he had no idea about the trade deal until the very last moment, surprising the former Mavs player as well. This is something that Marshall would have known and could have considered during his selection.

Regardless, Doncic’s impact on the Mavericks was huge, so huge that it had the whole sporting community shook. From NFL star Patrick Mahomes to NBA great Stephen Curry, nobody could believe what they witnessed back in February.

Luka Doncic can earn a staggering $369 million if he opts for a 3-year deal

But with each day passing by, it looks likely that Doncic will sign a contract extension with the Lakers themselves. But even in this contract extension with the Lakers, there is a twist. According to ESPN insiders Tim Bontemps and Bobby Marks, Doncic’s future hinges on a crucial August 2 date.

That is the day when Doncic is eligible to sign an extension. Now, the twist here is that if Doncic goes by the normal procedure, he’ll be eligible to sign a 4-year, $222 million deal. But this is where things get interesting. If Doncic instead goes for a 3-year shorter deal rather than the 4-year deal, he would earn $160 million with a player option in 2028-29.

By doing this, Doncic would be eligible to ink a massive 5-year, $369 million contract in 2028. Hence, he is in a pole position to make this decision on August 2. It remains to be seen which road the Lakers superstar prefers in the coming month.
