The Luka Doncic trade saga has been one of the most head-scratching events of the year. The Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade away their home-grown superstar in his prime has earned them universal condemnation. Fans have gone so far as to even stop being supporters of the team due to what they perceive as an unforgivable front office blunder.

Given this, a lot of Dallas Mavericks fans have decided that they will no longer patronize the team. In their minds, a team that sends away its own franchise player with no notice is not a trustworthy one. Even though getting Anthony Davis is potentially a great return, the idea of parting ways with one of their own is a heart-wrenching one. Washing their hands off the team for a historically inept-looking decision like this sounds only fair.

In turn, the front office has decided to make good on the fans’ investment by returning the prices of their canceled season tickets. This decision, however, seems to be a defensive one. It also signals to neutral observers that the front office understands the horrible optics of their decision to send away Doncic.

Luka Doncic was introduced as a Laker in his introductory press conference on February 4th. The Lakers are scheduled to play the Clippers during the first game of their Luka Magic era later tonight. Doncic did not reveal much of the back-and-forth between him and Mavericks GM Nico Harrison.

He kept his talk fixated on how he intends to turn the Lakers around and bring them a championship. Doncic also revealed that LeBron James had made him a phone call within moments of the trade being confirmed.

NBA fans find Dallas Mavericks’ decision to refund canceled tickets defensive

News of the Mavericks’ decision to refund tickets did not deter fans from taking further shots at the front office. This came in the backdrop of their decision to trade away Quentin Grimes for Caleb Martin while attaching a 2nd-rounder – a second straight baffling decision from the front office in quick succession.

No matter what the team does in the near future, the brickbats will not stop raining. Doncic was the heart and soul of this franchise and made it easier for fans to forgive the team’s tanking years at the end of Dirk Nowitzki’s prime. Not getting to enjoy the full fruits of that labor of love is definitely a hard price to pay – especially in the light of being the second best team in the NBA only 7 months back.

The hope for the front office would be to just get on with the basketball side of things and let Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving take care of fan service and support. These are two home-grown American Olympics gold medalists who have big fanbases from their NCAA days. While Doncic may have been the apple of their eye, these are two players who have all the ability in the world to fashion their own place in Dallas Mavericks fans’ hearts.
