Luke Donald to Return as Team Europe’s Captain for 2027 Ryder Cup Following Back-to-Back Wins

In 2027, Luke Donald will be eyeing a three-peat. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the Englishman will return as Team Europe’s captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup after back-to-back wins in the 2023 and 2025 editions.
Originally, Donald was not in the plans for the captaincy in 2023. Following their 19-9 loss in the 2021 event, Team Europe would name Henrik Stenson as the captain in 2022.
A few months later, Stenson would become one of the high-profile names to join LIV Golf. He was then removed from this position, becoming the first captain to face such a consequence before the match.
Donald would then replace him. The former World No.1 was appointed as the European captain on August 1, 2022 and given the role to lead the team.
During the 2023 edition at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy, the Europeans would start strong and take a massive lead. The Americans failed to win a single point on Friday and found themselves 5 points behind their opponents.
Eventually, Team Europe would have no problems and wrapped up an emphatic 16.5-11.5 victory. Following this success, Donald was appointed as the captain for the 2025 edition.
In his second stint, Europe were off to a strong start again. They would take an 11.5-4.5 lead heading into the singles action on Sunday. This was the largest lead any team had since Europe’s introduction into the event from 1979.
The Americans fought hard on Sunday and won 8.5 points in singles action. However, this was still not enough and ended up losing 13-15 at the Bethpage Black Course in New York, handing Donald and his team back-to-back wins.
It has been an unbelievable privilege to Captain these 12 men again. We set out to create history in New York and to become only the fifth European team to win in America. We achieved that. Keegan and the US team deserve huge credit for how they played on Sunday. We knew they… pic.twitter.com/h7PYIOhwBD

On Wednesday, the 48-year-old confirmed that he would return for a third stint. In a post on X, he would call the opportunity to lead the team again a “privilege” and claimed it would be a special week for him.
Truly a privilege to go again. With Adare Manor hosting and the 100th Anniversary of the Ryder Cup, it is going to be a very special week Let’s go!

The 2027 edition will take place at Adare Manor in Ireland. It will also mark the 100th anniversary of this competition.
Speaking of three-peats, Team Europe have done this twice since they started playing in 1979. The first three-peat came from 2002 to 2006.
Their second three-peat came from 2010 to 2014. In a 12-year span, they won 6 times and lost only once in 2008. A victory in 2027 will complete another three-peat for them.
Luke Donald addresses Jon Rahm’s Ryder Cup future after explosive attack on the DP World Tour
Earlier this week, Jon Rahm made explosive comments about the DP World Tour, raising questions about his Ryder Cup future. After becoming the captain again, Luke Donald addressed his comments.

Ahead of the LIV Golf Hong Kong event, the 2-time major champion claimed that the DP World Tour was “extorting” the players. His comments came after the European circuit granted “conditional releases” to some players.
DP World Tour members, who played on LIV Golf, would get fined for playing in LIV events that conflicted with tournaments on the European Tour. After LIV Golf stopped paying the fines, the tour came up with a solution.
Rahm did not like the conditions of this agreement. A European golfer currently needs to play in a minimum of 4 events to retain their DP World Tour membership. This membership is important as it is required to qualify for the Ryder Cup.
As per Rahm, the tour was asking him to play in 6 events now. This was something that did not sit well with him. In his attack, the Spaniard claimed that they were using him and others for their benefit.
"I don't like the conditions. They're asking me to play a minimum of 6 events and they dictate where 2 of those have to be…amongst other things that I don't agree with."

While speaking to the press after becoming the captain again, Donald would comment on this. He expressed that the golfer has his reasons and that there is plenty of time left to figure something out.
Well, first day on the job, so I haven’t talked to him yet but obviously I will talk to Jon. … I know he has his own reasons. But I look forward to catching up with him and really hope that he’s available.

Luke Donald says he has not yet talked to Jon Rahm about his Ryder Cup prospects for 2027, but that 16 or 17 months is plenty of time to figure it out.

"My hope is that Jon is available for that team."
In the 2025 edition, Rahm went 3-2-0 in his 5 matches and picked up 3 points. Rahm is one of the top names in golf at the moment, and despite his different views, Team Europe would love to have him back for the 2027 event.
