Manchester United have suffered at the hands of their opponents on multiple occasions in the previous season. From manager to management and medical staff, recurring injuries and internal conflict significantly hampered the Red Devils’ pursuit of a top four charge in the Premier League. However, despite their triumph in the FA Cup, all is not well at the club.
United left-back Luke Shaw has been at the club for over a decade now, after being brought in for a £30 million fee, a then world record transfer price for a teenager. Despite the player’s significance to the squad, Shaw was unable to make a significant impact in the starting line-up in the 2023/24 season. He only made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, owing most of his bad luck to injuries.
In a recent interview, Shaw pointed fingers at a number of elements, out of which the medical staff caught attention.
It's kind of everyone's fault. Partly mine and partly the medical staff's. I felt something against Aston Villa and came off at half-time. I didn't train all well but then trained the day before a game. If the manager asks me to play, I'll never say no. I shouldn't have played.Luke Shaw said (via Mirror)
Manchester United ready bid for £60 million Euros star
The Red Devils’ search for a new midfielder has led them all the way to Primeira Liga, the top flight of Portuguese football. United are in for a massive overhaul this summer if they are to get rid of current manager Erik ten Hag. Potential replacements starting from Mauricio Pochettino to Thomas Tuchel and Kieran McKenna have presented themselves.
However, the FA Cup triumph against Manchester City may offer reason for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to rethink his decision. That being said, United’s latest midfield target is a player for S.L Benfica. 19-year-old Joao Neves has been on the club’s wish list for quite some time and as of now, the club are willing to spend £60 million to procure his services.
To add excitement to his potential arrival and to set the stage at Old Trafford, comparisons between the player and former club legends have been made. The teenager has been compared to greats like Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, which only adds excitement to the transfer. If United are to bring him home, they will have to beat rival club Liverpool in the race for Neves.
