New York Yankees pitcher Luke Weaver recently joined Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman on The Show to talk about the buzz circling around Juan Soto. While speaking of Soto, Weaver had nothing but high praise and respect for his teammate.
He recalls the time Juan Soto called him a “unicorn” and said, “he’s one of the best out there.” It was during a moment when Weaver was juggling multiple innings, adjusting to “a unique role” and just doing different things to boost the team.
Soto did not hold back from praising Weaver for the effort he put into the team. Moreover, such a compliment coming from one of the MLB’s best superstars is worth everything. Just like everyone in the Bronx, the pitcher also feels Soto belongs in the pinstripes and wishes he does stay with them.
He further added how much Soto means to him not only as a teammate but also as a friend. And with the current free agency buzz going around, Luke Weaver believes no matter how much money you give Soto, it’ll all be worth it.
Whether he’ll sign with the NY Yankees or not is a big question. Many teams are already in pursuit, with the New York Mets being the first in line. The Yankees will meet Soto soon, but they are currently at the last of the line.
Before the beginning of the free agency, the Yankees made a qualifying offer to Soto for $21.05 million. He has until November last to accept or reject the offer. The team and the player, along with agent Scott Boras, can further discuss the formalities. However, in case Soto rejects, the team will get a compensation pick for 2025.
Juan Soto’s free agency fires up with teams lining up in California
The Toronto Blue Jays will have their meeting with Juan Soto first, ahead of the other teams. Apart from the Blue Jays, Yankees, and Mets, other top MLB teams are also in line. The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers are also among interested teams.
The asking price for Soto’s services has risen in the free agency. What started off as $500 million has now reached a height of $600 million and is expected to rise even more. Some are even concluding that the contract is to be over 10 years at $600 million, or he might even surpass Shohei Ohtani’s $700 million deal.

While it’s all up in the rumors, it’s hard to say which team Soto will choose. The priorities have been both financial and organizational (who can reach the World Series Championship) as per his agent. He’ll take time to meet and speak with all the interested teams and then put pen to paper.
